Wood cores are more expensive and usually slightly heavier. But they offer great strength and durability. Better flex characteristics as the board builds more energy and pops alot better..
All the new slingshot twin tips have wood cores making them bomber..

Haven't ridden other wood core boards but my wood core Underground mutant is awesome and after watching Adrian from Underground demo the durability of the wood core by putting the tips of the board between objects on the beach and jumping on it, I'm sold on the durability aspect. Certainly won't see any of these boards get snapped.

i snapped a foam FLX earlier this year which underground replaced (quickly and no questions asked) with a new wood core board.
the wood core does seem stronger but i got much better pop from the old foam board.

Wood core is the future, the weight issue is offset by less glass, wood gives a live ride / active board / dynamic feel to the board and dont have to be expensive , ive heard of a brand starting at $685 complete

why were kiteboards traditionally made from foam to start with?, is it becasue they were made to be as light as possible?

wake boards are generally still made with foam as is cheaper and easier,( not all). There hasn't been a big change in there construction in a long time until Slingshot with there new wake boards turned the market on it's head, with new construction and flex creating a stir...
