Hi Guys,

can anyone point me to some Botany bay web cams?

allways prefer looking for the sea-horses rather than trusting the charts.

Thanks - Matthew.

I'm not aware of any, but you can always call the boys at Kitepower (1300 732 432) who will be happy to give you a live report!

No cams as far as I know but the wind meter I believe is at the end of the airport runway. This means that anything close to the western shore will probably be a bit under this reading in wind strength. Also, areas around Botany Bay can vary greatly depending on where you are and where the wind is coming from. As an example - the NE wind is always stronger at Kurnell. Towra in a NE'er can be either greater than or less than Dolls. Dolls is tidal with dominant currents and depending on the wind and tide direction can be either good or crap. Easterlies can be light at Dolls but acceptable at 1st Car Park. There are wind shadows in close at Hollywood due to the trees.

There are lots of other local things to consider as well. Most you will find out with time and experience.

Thanks for your help guys,

reason I was looking was a couple of time I have been to 1 car park in NE when the airport wind meter is showing 15 knots, but at the car park there is not enough warrant a kite.

Do you regularly need to drop 3 or 4 knots off the airport reading to get the realistic 1st car park reading (in a NE)

Thanks - Matthew

I've got no idea what the actual wind reading on the beach would be, but when the airport is reading 15knots I'll be struggling to keep upwind on my 14m kite, standard twin tip, 85kgs.

If the airports reading 15 knots then the western shore will generally be 3-4 knots less. If it's a true summer NE sea breeze then the numbers will be closer. That said, it can vary along the length of the western shoreline. Any trees behind the beach will lift the breeze over the beach and the wind shadow can extend into the water for 20-30m.
