I will be working around the Port Macquarie area over the coming months. Was wondering if it is a safe place for a novice to hone their skills. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Hey 23Jetty. If you are a beginner after flatwater you can kite in the river mouth opposite where the whalewatching and jet-ski hire places are, opposite town green. It's called Pelican Island, if you don't have a boat you can wade or swim across at low tide but it only works in a NE'r.

A fairly beginner-friendly ocean spot on the NE is on the north shore (you need to go across the Settlement Pt ferry and then head towards the beach) where you won't find any swimmers or surfers and the shorey is easy to negotiate. You can do a little downwinder to the north breakwall.

Middle Rock (Lake Cathie) on the SE is a bit trickier and I wouldn't recommend it to a beginner if the swell is bigger than 2ft.

Enjoy :)

Can anyone recommend any wave spots that handle a little bit of a cross offshore?

all thats beeen mentioned are good wave spots , just has to be about a 10 meter swell for pelican island to work or go back 150 years when is was all sand:)
