Just new to kiting and still fall off a bit. Getting back to the board without drowning is always challenging and time consuming. Is there any reason not to put a leg rope on the board like surfing? Cheers Jack.

Majority say don't use a board leash and for good reason in IMO.

Basically, the kite can pull you with power, meaning you will be pulling the board towards you with power. the board can dig into the water causing great tension then shoot straight at you.

Getting knocked out on land is bad but in the water.... its not a risk most a willing to take.

Check out this page for other helpful advice if you want.

Hi Egga,

The Smedg is right, there is no need for a board leash, your kite gives you all the rescue and board retrieval tools you will ever need. If and when you end up in a situation tangled with another kiter, in waves or some sort of equipment or user failure you probably want to be as far away from your board as possible.

There are always a few exceptions, think about your safety. If I go out in surf unstrapped on a surfboard and choose to kite waves on the end of a reef I will use a leg rope, I don't want to be dragging into reef to get my board and be stuck downwind on the reef. I accept the risk of having it attached. If I'm in fiji kiting waves 5km off shore the you bet your ass I'll have one. But only with a surfboard. I've seen too many people who started out using board leashes who simply can't drag upwind to the board or don't have the patience. this is lazy and stoopid. eventually you'll learn to curl your toes in the pads and keep the board on your feet! stick with it.
