Hey guys,

I'm considering a move to Sydney but I need more info about the kite situation before I make up my mind..
I've been kiting for 4 years, mostly flat water and wakestyle. The plan is to have normal work hours, probably 9 to 5-isch and live somewhere fairly close to CBD.
I've been checking out the NSW kite map and it seems like Botany Bay is the place to go.. (correct me if im wrong)
How long would it take to get there after work with the traffic and all?
How often is it windy enough to go kiting in the afternoon and during weekends? (say on a monthly average)
I guess it's not as windy as Perth, but then again Sydney doesnt get a massive off season with no wind like Perth does, right?

Basically I wanna know what life is like as a kitesurfer in Sydney and any help is much appreciated!

Cheers!

Hey mate,

I don't know where you lived before but the conditions here aren't, for the most part, "perfect" (not like WA anyway). That said, once you learn where to go and when... it can be really really good. I'm a wakestyle rider too and was fed up with the chop at first, but there is some primo flat water around. I would say we have some of the most consistent summer wind on the East coast, and like you said, we don't have the same big off season. You'll get consistent southerlies and westerlies throughout the winter. In the high season you'll get to kite 3-4 days per week. 1-2 out of season. Northeast seabreezes are generally between 15-30 knots. The 30+ winds are usually southerlies or westerlies.

You basically just need to come in and meet up with some of the guys and we can show you where to go. I work at Kitepower down in Botany so just pop into the shop and I can show you around. The level here isn't as high as I'm used to so it will be nice to have some more wakestyle guys around. If you're coming down from the CBD driving can be a nightmare in the rush so probably an hour or so. If you're coming on bus you can get down on the 303 in around the same. Same with the train/bus combo - about an hour. Hope I answered everything alright.

Cheers

@Drury: Thanks a lot for the answer, great info!
Ok, so kiting in Sydney sounds pretty good.

Next thing would be to figure out a suitable area to live in, which is close to the kite spots (Botany Bay I suppose) and to CBD for work.
I'm not used to living in a big city and I'm certainly not looking forward to getting stuck in traffic for an hour when all I wanna do is get out on the water. So I really wanna find an area which reduces time spent frustrated in the car, and increases time spent nailing new tricks on the water =)

Can you guys recommend any good areas?
I've been looking at the areas around Botany Bay (Sans Souci, Kogarah, Rockdale, Brighton, Monterey), which seems really nice and affordable. But hows the commute to the city? 20min by train, 1h by car?

Hows the drive from the eastern suburbs (Coogee, Randwick etc) down to Botany Bay?

Hey Blitz
I can get from Annandale to the bay in 25-30 mins in rush hour. You just need to know a few back roads and don't go at 5-5.30 when everyone is trying to get home. If it's blowing, you need a good excuse in place to get off at 4-4.30.
Cheers

I live in the City (Surry Hills) and go down for work and kiting. You're better off trying to get out of the city than in. When I drive to work (which is in Sans Souci) at around 9 there is traffic at a dead stop every morning on the way into the city while I cruise by the other way in no traffic. Looks like an absolute nightmare. I'd try to get into Surry Hills, Randwick, Red fern or something like that so you can take a quick train to work and then bust your ass out of the city in the light traffic (around 3-4:30) to get down for a kite!
