So today there was a forecast for 25+ knots of NE. Kurnell, Sydney Airport and Newcastle were all showing green arrows so I thought I'd checkout Narrabeen for the first time, at the Bassin.

When I got there at 2pm today there was zero wind, I waited for the wind to come over 2 hours but the NE never came, it probably peaked to 7 knots of breeze max...

So my questions is why didn't Narrabeen get the NE seabreeze ? Is it a totally different weather pattern with the Collaroy/Long reef land sticking out to the sea and missing out on the seabreeze or was it just an un-usual day

At 4pm I left and went to Botany bay where it was 25+ knots. My friend stayed there and confirmed it never came.

Strange day...

Happens all the time, there were 12 guys out at palm beach today.
I would say it was around 16 knots.
Am sure it's the headlands that muck up the wind.
It was windy 10 meter weather New Year's Day at palmy and no wind at Narrabeen.
I must admit it did surprise me how little wind there was today.
I live at Wheeler hts and it looked very windy on the hill.

My theory is that the wind lifts up over the hot land. It's obvious that there is more wind further out to sea about a mile offshore and I have also experienced this whilst sailing off the coast. So although you need the land to be hot for the seabreeze circulation to happen, if it's too hot you get this effect. Here at Pittwater we also always see the wind stronger in the Pittwater than at the beach (Palm beach). So maybe it's something to do with the hot sand on the beach?

Yep, one of the downfalls of being a kitesurfer on the northern beaches. There is something about the local geography which makes our seabreezes crap. Often Palm beach is a bit more windy, but the difference between Narrabeen and Palmie on the 3rd and 4th Jan is the biggest I've ever noticed. Less than 10kn on Narra (maybe closer to 5kn), and over 15kn on Palm Beach. I guess this is why we love Southerlies so much...
