Not sure where you get your information however both are considered wind powered vessels and neither are required to specifically give way to the other, apart from the normal right of way rules.

Check page 35 of the maritime boating handbook
www.rms.nsw.gov.au/maritime/index.html

These are internationally recoginsed rules and rights of way, so I'm not sure why you think kiters specifically are suppose to give way to a sail board.

Just a thought, but did you consider you might be getting in their way? Not the other way around? It's one bloody big ocean, pretty sure we can all find enough room to share it together

No... Us clowns would normally stay at least 25M (line length) away from you when you are downwind of us on opposite tack. Doesn't matter what type of sailing you do. Same goes. Unfortunately it can't always happen like this like when there's not enough space due to overcrowding or otherwise. When this happens all Sailors need to use common sense and respect the fact that we all have the right to use the waterway.

I take it you see us drop the kite in the water when we crash etc and are paranoid that we'll drop the kite on a windsurfer downwind of us. Well that's not the case. It doesn't matter whether you're another kiter or windsurfer or boat, we will not try anything that may cause us to crash the kite unless there is at least a lines length between us and the other water users.

Unfortunately like most sports there are a small minority who are reckless and do not obey the rules. Don't judge our sport by this minority. It goes both ways. I've seen a few windsurfers being reckless too but for the most part they use common sense and share the water without problems like most of us.

I wish more kiters were like you , I sail at 1 spot
Only that is shared by kiters , one is trying to be smart by coming really close to us , the other must be a novice as his kite has nearly hit a few of us on a number of accessions .

There is one unwritten rule...or polite gesture...kiters give way to poleys while they are heading out through the break...they are generally underpowered, so give them a break. I have been lined up by many a poley from WA to the east coast, quite frankly I tend to generalise against them, but I give way when their on their way out...
Kiters need to give way to other kiters.... Newbies, or TT riders don't understand surfboard riders, yes we fade , and fade on a wave, then suddenly turn and kite down the line when the wave is right....too many times I find a TT Kiters right being me, and suddenly in my way..
Sorry to say TT riders, you can not possible surf waves on a small twin tip board, yes have fun craving, boosting, powering along the line, but if there's a surfboard rider trying to go down wind along the wave, give them a break, our kite is basically falling/floating along and we don't have instant power to respond...it is why we are there, we don't go to flat water spots, and carve through your jumping zones...
A bit of respect, and thought of what others are doing around you...that includes jumping right in front of people....
God I sound like a poley....kiters can be such disrespectful a$$es at times.....
