well im taking the leap over from windsurfing! been windsurfing for 10years plus and now keen to take up kiting for the light winds when cant get out wavesailing!
got two questions 1- is there anyone on northern beaches that can give lessons? im not keen on travelling to botany bay and forking out for x amount of lessons. ..2 - do i really need lessons?? is it something i can learn on my own if i go away and fork out on a kite. i have flown kites ( 2 line power line kites) before so really just need direction on launching & landing etc. anyway cheers for any help

No one does lessons on the Northern Beaches, its not suitable to teach in open ocean conditions.
AFAIK none of the councils will issue a permit to teach there either.

Best idea is to make the effort to have a couple of One on One lessons with Kitepower instructors, or with Nick from Kitesessions in Botany Bay, these are the only 2 legally permitted and insured operators down there.

( You definatly need lessons, unlike a windsurf rig a kite is very dangerous in inexperienced hands, not only to yourself but also bystanders. They may seem a little expensive but your progression will be much quicker, and safer, and more enjoyable. I'm not sure who does lessons on the northern beaches, but the guys at balmoral boards narrabeen, or wind surf 'n' snow long reef will point you in the right direction.

If you go out and attempt to learn yourself chances are you will hurt yourself(possibly badly) and trash your kite, not to mention alienating your self from all the local kiters who are very sensitive to incidents that could cause beach bans. )

Not to put you off but these are fair comments.

For the satey of everyone (including yourself) and the longevity of the sport on the local beaches PLEASE get lessons. You will enjoy it alot more AND progress faster with less 'bad' habits.

I know Botany can be a way to go... however you'll be more sucessful and there is slightly stronger winds so more riding to be had! Once your sorted, you can go anywhere you want!
