Hi all

Im looking at purchasing my first surfboard and seeking a little advice on an appropriate surfboard for a noob
I have been getting out in the waves a little bit of late on my TT's (Slingshot SX and Shinn "the Monk") and absolutely loving it. I only started kiting in Nov 2010 but pretty happy with my progression to date. Never really surfed growing up, but consider myself to have reasonable board skills and good balance as I grew up skateboarding and waterskiing and still ski/wakeboard quite regularly. Back in the day we used to ride anything we could get our hands on behind the skiboat (for a bit of fun), old surfboards, skim discs, bit of ply...whatever!

Anyway, my weight varies between 102-105kg, about 6'2" tall.
I have seen a number of boards in the Buy & Sell that I thought may do the job?

2011 Slingshot Coupe - 6' 0"
2010 Naish Gun - 6' 2"
2010 Firewire - 6' 0"
2010 Cabrinha Thruster 6'1" or 6' 3"

Probably leaning towards the Cab Thruster......can get a good deal at the moment Would this be suitable to get me through the early stages but also keep me going for awhile without the need to upgrade?

Any constructive advice welcome..thanks in advance.

Don't leave out the WAM, I have a 6'0 myself and it's a great board, you just have to work out what waves you will be using it in.

I have a firewire as my surfboard and I like it but the firewires couldn't stand up to the rigors of kiting and there were a lot of delam issues as a result.

The best surfbaord is the one that you are out there riding. I'd get something short and loose (i've got a 5'9" Wainman, I'm 6' & 92kgs) for here in Perth but you could go for something long and fast if you have decent waves.

You'll never regret it though. I love the twin tip too but the surfboard is great fun when there are waves around.

The naish gun and the cab thruster are both long and skinny, if you're just starting out with the surfboard something wider would probably be more fun to learn on.

Naish 6'0" custom fish is good fun to learn on, North WAM if you can find second hand is excellent as NickT suggests there is 6'0" 2010 on seabreeze at the moment.

But before you buy second hand go and see your local shop you may get a good deal on something new, or talk to one of the interstate retailers who may have some end of season closeouts to move on to make space for next years stock!

I know Darren at AKS in Perth has some end of season deals on airush boards or maybe even some of the ex demo north stuff. Don't just go on the website deals, talk to someone in the shop even if its on the phone.

I agree with ApatheticEnd, me to 6' 98Kgs

I ride a ben wilson pro 6'2" just got it, holds a tight rail in the surf, its my first and only kite surf board.

When the waters flat the surfboard is no fun (straps might change that but they feel really limiting to foot positioning, only used them once and was like that felt yuk) the 139 cardboard pro TT comes out for the flat stuff for some big boosting
