Hey guys

I have decided to try and take up kite surfing and i have a friend that is going to give me lessons , he also has a set of 2nd hand gear he wants to sell and said it would be good for me , as we are around the same size .

95kg
6"4

just asking your opinion if this is an ok deal as the gear would be in great condition.

14m Flex foil ion 3 08' model $700

under ground 132 flx $400

i will be using this at the brighton/ sandgate area and up the coast hopfully :)

Thanks

Not sure about the kite size (It's windier in WA), but the board seems a little small to me to learn on.
I would have thought that 142cm+ would suit you better.
I know it's cheaper to learn from a friend, and if he has a little kite you can do some flying on the beach to get the hang of it, but getting some real lessons is imperative.
Self rescue, location awareness and other safety factors are best leant from a qualified instructor. You're mates are not the best to learn these skills from.
Enjoy!

You are taller but around the same weight as me.

I have a 138 xpact and 12m Vapor III. I am off and going at around 14kts.

With a 14m and 132 you might be OK, and you would certainly need a kite that big to drive that board, but I don't think they are a very good match. I think you will progress much easier on a 12/138+ matching.

To be honest, it is mainly the board. It is way too small for you. The kite would be OK, but you will just need to consider a second smaller kite sooner to handle those 20+ days.

The prices don't look to be lower than what you find some thing suitable second hand on here so no real incentive on that front.

as said above... 132 is too small. learning will be harder, and you will need more wind.

thanks alot for all your input ,

i am hopefully going out tomorrow and learning with a 10.5m
i have read alot and it does seem the board is way to small , he doesnt seem to think so , but i may just have a bit more of a look around for a 2nd hand kite and board,
so you think anything bigger than 138 and around a 12 metre i should be looking for ,
i heard that kite is for more advanced people also so might bit jumping in the deep end a bit with a kite that size .

thanks again :)

cant wait to go out tomorrow though

Kite is a bit old, and prone to issues such as valves peeling off. Make sure you check that it will stay inflated if possible pump it up and have a chat about it, lay out the lines and check them for wear and knots, etc.
Board is too small, get something bigger between 1.40 and 1.50, we have new Cab Prodigy 1.47's 2010 models for $600, and new last years kites from $1350 in sizes to suit you. KP Qld will have similar deals go see them and buy from a shop that will back up what they sell.

I would say discuss it with your friend a bit more. The kite is a bit big for windy days but will serve well in the light days as a beginner.
As for the valves they have most likely been repaired already so just ask him.

Yes the 132 is a bit small for you but also avoid getting a massive steam boat of a board you will outgrow quickly

Now that is just funny...!!, although not for your mate I am sure. Tell him to look out on ebay for his stuff - and advise all the local cash converters...

Feel free to post potential kites/ boards here for comment of suitabilty. There are some "interesting" kites out there for sale.

Well I have everything sorted just about , just brOught a brand new 2010 liquid force influence gring 138. A new 2011 luxury liquid force harness and should be receiving my 2009 flexible foil ion 3 12.5m this week hopefully.
I hired a kite on tuesday with a friend for my first lesson , a 6m cab I think and my friend taught mr how to launch and land and fly the kite around a bit , can't wait till the next good weather to go fly it again , not going to jump on the board yet though haha, was fun .

You did very well the other day mate. Your mate is a sponsored rider and from what I saw, he taught you well. If you are by yourself, come and say hi to us so we can keep an eye on you. Happy kiting!

cool thanks alot , yeah well i am going to need to rent a kite until mine gets here from WA , looks like its going to take a bit longer than expected grrr.
but i will let you guys know, i am hopefully going to have another crack tomorrow (friday) so im hoping surfconnect is open to rent me a kite.
i am bringing a freind to help me launch and have a play for a bit.

my friend is going to teach me body draging and that next , not sure if this is part of self rescueing of not , but i will ask for that also . he does have his ticket to train people so that makes me a bit more confident :)
see you guys out there
