Too many variables. If you've had or are having lessons (which you should) your instructor will advise you.

Agree completely with the lesson plan.
Any responsible instructor would steer you away from the Rebel as a first off kite.
Great kite but they do require too much experienced input to make them ideal for learning.
Lots of way better first kite choices out there.

Nothing wrong as a 2011 Rebel as a first kite, direct steering, medium bar pressure, really good quality bar and lines, and a quality finish. It's at the premium end of kites with regards to quality and cost, but if your budget stretches it's a great choice.
With regards to size based on your weight it is best to talk to the other guys at your local to see what they reckon, or your instructor.

Hi there frostyballs,

There is not a thing wrong with learning on a modern Rebel. Puppet, better to comment only from first hand experience eh

The North kite have the best safety system in the business, they are as stable as the best of them. You have the ability to slow the turning down dramatically with the back steer line adjustment and smaller width setup on the bar. They have good power and are made of the finest materials which means it will be flying long after most other kites have stretched, torn and fallen apart.

There is a good reason Rebels sell more than any other kite, it's because they are top shelf and suit everyone from beginner to advanced freerider.

I have owned rebels when they first came out and 2 subsequent seasons.
I now ride 2011 Rebels.

They are Perfect for learning on.
Fully controllable depower, 5th line safety and very well made.
You can also adjust the bar throw on the lines to suit if you have short arms.
Excellent all rounder kites in both waves and freestyle.
Don't know why someone would not recommend them to a beginner.

The new Rebels are so easy to use. I recon they are perfect to learn on. They go upwind like a train and have lots of bottom end power, so be careful about getting one too big for your first kite, but at your weight in Queensland conditions it should be about right. Your local kite shop or school should be able to help more.
Best of luck

Hey Frostyballs. the rebel is an excellent kite. I'm not so sure that at 110kg the 11m would be adequate in QLD conditions. It's a tough choice if you're understandably just wanting to buy 1 kite to start with. I believe the rebel has similar power to the F-One Bandits that I fly also in QLD. I'm 80kg and usually fly a 10m but often find I'm pumping up the 12. That said, I am in a spot that often misses the better winds that you find south of Fraser. Speak to similar size kiters in your area for the best advice.

At your weight I would recommend a 12m over the 11.
This leave the door open for a smaller kite for the windy days. Also learning is a bit easier with some grunt in the kite.

11m would be a good choice if you are 100% committed to sticking with only 1 kite.

Have to agree with that.
I just took a slingshot b2 trainer kite out today at Mudjimba in about 20 knots or so...talk about a handful. i am totally new to kiteboarding and after that experience will be going straight for lessons....Safety first for me.

I agree about using a trainer kite too. Its better to learn basic skills with the trainer then your lessons can concentrate on body dragging, using the board and getting going. This can actually work out cheaper, depending on how much your lessons cost. Then you can use the trainer for family and friends, and in the local park.

Be carefull with the big kite, the breeze may drop and the breeze may pick up! When it picks up, and you have 17 meters..

As for a board, a TT that is basic is good.

The 12m Evo will be a great choice. I'm 6'5" and 95kg and started with a 2008 10m Cabrinha Switchblade and a big board (147cm x 41cm) last summer. However, this summer I have graduated to a smaller board (Shinn Luigi 134 x 43) and therefore have needed a bigger kite to get me going. I bought a 2009 12m Rebel and wish I had bought it last year. I prefer the more direct feel on the bar and I am able to ride it from 15-25knts, which covers the vast majority of the wind conditions here in Perth.
