Okay, so I'm not sure quite what to expect but here goes!

I'm interested in getting a kitesurfing-based gift for my partner for his birthday next month, but I'm not sure quite what to get. He has had the "initial" lesson - body dragging on sand, he owns his own kite too and harness - but no other gear and he's had plenty of recent experience on a trainer kite (200 hours +).

I was tending towards a lesson in which he could learn to get up on a board and so on. Or I could look around more for some kit like a board etc - however this is pretty expensive from what I've seen and heard (and being a uni student money is pretty tight!). After having a brief look around, lessons seem to cost about $300 for 3hours, so budget is probably $300.

What should I do? And if a lesson is the way to go, can anyone recommend a place?

In that case he'll probably need some medical attention...
i'm guessing he did body dragging in water... otherwise, he should look for a different instructor...

Start here with lessons:
BoardCrazy Belmont (02) 4947 7131
Kitepower Sans Souci (02) 9529 6894
Windsurfnsnow Collaroy (02) 9971 0999
X-Shore Diamond Beach (02) 6559 3000
Kitesessions (Lessons) Sydney 0410 937 222

$300 will not do much when it comes to buying gear. Although, if he already owns an inflatable kite, sounds like he only needs a board. You could get him a $300 voucher at a good local kitesurfing shop. Or just go with lessons if he hasn't had many. For $300 you should be able to get him at least couple of good lessons, and that would give him invaluable starting knowledge. If he has a full time job, he can get gear him self, at least you'll give him a nice incentive to go for lessons. Mind you, we are just about entering windless part of the year, so the kiting scene will be very slow til October...

Body Dragging on sand? Yes definitely needs another lesson and this time from a PROFESSIONAL.

I recommend Nick from Kitesessions (0410937222) or Neil from kitesurfinglessons.com.au
I sympathise being a UNI student myself, but a professional lesson i'm sure will be greatly appreciated. Other gift ideas that would be nice are;

Rash vests and boardies $50-$80 ( go one size up so he can ware them over his wetsuit to look like a real kiter)
NSWKBA membership $70 (gets him insured)
Kit bag for all his equipment/equipment to come $150-$250
Or windsurfn'Snow in collaroy (99710999) do Gift Vouchers for kiteboarding equipment so thats an option as well.

All in all i think another lesson would probably be the best thing for him.
