I seem to only be able to do a water start in one direction , when I try it in the opposite direction it becomes a total disaster. Is this a common thing or am I just F-/:;"d in the head ?

It frustrated me so much that I gave up kiting for 3 months and took up land boarding (with a foil kite). Talk about making a 180! But it actually helped me as I was able to edge more easily and go both ways more quickly. After a while I simply tried the same stance and techniques on water and it clicked!

You must need a bit of space to land board wouldn't you ? Where I live there are power lines and trees every where , I tried a bit of kiting in one of the parks once , but wind was all over the place after passing around buildings and trees , I could barely keep it in the air , and that was just a 3 m foil trainer . I have thought about a car park , but again too much stuff in the way . I would guess I need a wide beach with a direct onshore to make a land board viable wouldn't I ?

Just keep at it. Didnt believe it, but as everybody said, one day it just suddenly clicks! And it does not feel as if you are doing anything different. And when it does, its an amazing feeling. What helped me a lot was watching the waterstart process in the Progression series, gave me something to visualise.

When I was starting out & had the same trouble, I took my kite board to a cable park & practiced riding switch for about an hour or so.

You'll be happy to know you'll keep running into the same problem as you progress. I can jump and do some tricks natural, but just spend my goofy tack mowing the grass. I decided I had to really focus on goofy when I wanted to start doing jumping transitions. I just couldnt land goofy pointing my board down wind. I also couldnt ride toeside while goofy. I spent my last session focusing on goofy and riding like an unco. Still not there yet but a few more sessions and it'll click. Stay at it, we all went through it and you'll go through it again with every trick/progression so it's worth remembering how long it takes to learn each new skill so you don't get frustrated when it's not working for you.

remember the things you learnt when you first learnt the other way, downwind first then cut etc.
Will only take you half an hour to learn if you commit, then its useful as
for example, you don't have to wait for old mate on his lawnmower to go past before you go, you can simply go the other direction!
