Hey,

I'm new to the sport and I live about an hours out of Botanny in Sydney so I would like t know when would be good for me to go so I don't waste my time. WhenI look at the forecats im really not sure what to look for. Any help?

I'm 6'1", 180 pds (82 kg) and I have a 10m kite, if that's useful.

cheers

in my opinion, depending on the size of board your using, youd prob get going ok from 16-17knots to 25ish before it gets too hairy.

Im 6 foot and around 85 kg and midway between noob and intermediate and usually only kite around botany bay. I have a 12m kite and a 138 board. I'll go out in anything from around 16-17 knots up to around 25 knots where it starts getting a little hairy. Anything less than 16 knots and I have to really work the kite and focus on my board technique etc to keep going up wind and minimise doing the walk of shame. In my opinion with your size, weight and 10m kite I reckon you will find it tough getting up and going in anything less than 20 knots. Just wait for our favourite little green arrows as they are just starting to pop up on the wind charts and you should be right to go. Either that, or maybe look at getting a bigger kite for the lighter wind days

JIC U do not use this...
www.bom.gov.au/marine/wind.shtml
click in to zone of interest.
I use this as a good predictor there is a local focus zone around capital cities for 48 hrs in advance..

The main variable will be sea-breeze - hopefully someone Sydney way can give you parameters...
Locally in summer months (Sunny Coast) The SB tends to kick in with 26C+ on the forecast - and will swing the wind towards a NE by 20-40 degrees if it is naturally blowing from NW thru' to S and can add up to 12 knots.

It can help to pickup on ISOBAR (pressure) charts (In Southern hemisphere) the high pressure has anti-clockwise wind flow and the low pressure clockwise - the basis for forecasts. The closer the pressure lines the stronger the wind.

U will always get caught out by the wind but experience helps
The best way I have found to insulate myself from low winds stuffing the day is a big board - my weapon of choice - SECTOR 60

Cheers

Keep an eye on this website at around midday:

www.bom.gov.au/nsw/observations/sydney.shtml

Of interest are Sydney Airport and Kurnell. You want to be looking at Direction, Speed knts, Gust knts, and highest wind gust knts / time. As soon as it goes over 17 / 18 and gusting over 20 you should be right to go.

If it's a warm or hot day the wind usually picks up as the afternoon goes on.

Hey jlock, your 140-5cm TT will be great but how great depends mainly on two things, rocker and width. (bigger fins help upwind also...45mm+ r very handy)
So, if your board is to get you and your 10m out on 15kts it will be 43+ wide and of a fairly flat rocker the whole length. ie not a cab custom if you know what they are(awesome boards but not LW)
Also, the type of 10m can vary your options heaps. Ie a BWS at that size wouldn~t go near 25kts - it would be way over powered, but a 10mRally would eat it up easy if set right. Conversely at the low end your BWS will give you more time than most. Lot~s of variables here m8 - get out there!
