Hi guys,

I just got myself a 9m and a 12m 2013 rebel.

I've been out on it a few times and I love how quick they are, easy turning etc.

Where I left off in my previous kite (Cab Convert 2011) was that I was staying upwind and doing transitions and starting on some jumps.

Now I've got the rebels and for some reason can't seem to be able to stay upwind very well anymore. I just don't seem to be able to get to power right. Transitions go even better because of the quick kite but I'm having issues finding the 'sweet spot'.

Could it be the set up, are there any different things that I can do to get better upwind capabilities? I must also say the conditions I've been out in have not been totally ideal (gusts and lulls) but even so I should be able to stay upwind.

Or could it just be that I have to get used to my new gear after not having kited for a few months through winter?

Anyone else have this issue with the new rebels?

Don't take any offense by this, but it's not the kite. Most likely is the time off you have had. Those kites are easy to fly. Make sure you check your line lengths, even though the kites are new, sometimes (and this has happened to me) that the lines don't come out of the factory just perfect. It could be a trimming issue.
If the lines are good then you just need a bit more time on the kites. The rebels are one of the easier kites to fly and do so many things pretty well. A great all rounder.
I can't imagine that the 2013 kite would be difficult to fly or stay upwind....

Not taking offence at all mate. In fact I'm happy its not the kite cause that means it not money down the drain! Probably just some start up issues.. I'll get used to it! I'll just have to try a few different settings and see what suits me best I think

I can't claim any expertise having only learnt recently, and have never flown a kite that is not a rebel. But one thing I have learnt is that you need to let it run down wind s little to get full speed up then you can go up wind quite easily and also keep the speed up easily. The kite seems to have a speed barrier above which you have to get to go well and ride out lulls etc.
I've found that beneath that speed barrier you can be planing but not going up wind very well and are vulnerable to lulls etc.
This might be true of all kites, I don't know. Hope this helps a little!

Hey akwa had the 2012 rebels for a year now, had no issues, one thing about your kite you need to check is your lines the north lines do stretch quite a bit. Sounds like you just need to tune your bar, run out your lines and make sure all your lines are equal length. I believe the line adjustments are built into the bar this year. My mate had issues with his kite tuned his lines and it was all sweet, not sure if the 2013 lines are the same as the 2012 tho. Also have you tryed the second option on the wing tip that gives you more bar pressure/kite feedback I found this setting way better for me.

Hey Akwa,
Without seeing you kite I am just taking a guess here but your new kites are considerably higher aspect and more efficient than your old kite.
In general this will require more board speed in lighter wind to keep the kite from the edge of the window so concentrate on keeping your speed up.

Also consider pulling your back lines in another knot through the bar ends. As long as it's doesn't cause the kite to stall it should give you a bit more power.

They do feel different to the older Rebels that's for sure but I had no trouble going upwind on the 2013 12m I tried the other day. I actually think it went upwind quite a bit better than the 2011 Rebel.

The jumps were awesome too!

Thanks guys! next time i'm out on the water i'll try going downwind a little more first before going upwind to get more speed.

I'll also try to change the settings here and there to see what effect it has.

To be honest it probably really is my just not having the right skills just yet and have to get used to this new kite.

I might even get 1 size bigger as well to give me that extra oomph!
