Had a lesson today at Maroochy and felt I got smashed from one side of the river to the other. Finally got up and rode the board on my natural stance the the whole way across but then got dragged under water fighting the tide back to where I started. Feeling like A beaten man tonight. Please tell me eventually I will look back and believe I did not get it sooner. You guys make it look so simple. I have so much respect for this sport and will not stop having lessons till I am competent.

Hi frosty balls...know exactly how you feel....had lessons last year and never really went on with it then as got hammered one day in 20-25 (gold for some) and never really recovered for the rest of the season....went out today on maroochy north shore with things going ok until mini disaster but not unrecoverable...made it back to shore but had lost my nerve again...i figure that every time we get in the chance of stuff going to hell gets less and less....i still zap out when there's too much water traffic but have no choice but to suck it up and pump up...lets keep persisting and we'll be out the front in no time...cheers and have a great new year

to frostyballs: yep join the 'walk of shame' club mate haha. I'm confident having my left foot forward and actually can go upwind quite well and in control. My right foot forward on the other hand is still pretty rusty! we'll all get there eventually! It sounds like you'll be a fast learner.

to Grillsy: mate I've been in the same boat. had to do a self rescue once because my kite inverted. That didn;t go too well and a guy came and helped me out.

straight after this I practiced my self rescue several times.

before you know it a few sessions later my kite inverted again. This time however, because I practiced, I squared away my self rescue easily. I grabbed my kite and sailed in without any issues.

This really boosted my confidence. Knowing that you can easily come back in shore when things go wrong is a great feeling.

So morale of the story: I don't know if you have, but I would recommend practicing your self rescue over and over. It will boost your confidence!

Crikey,

you could end up having lessons for years, have your lessons for the basic building of awareness, the rest is experience. Even after 5 or 6 years of kiting there are lots of times I feel Incompetent for one reason or another - thats mother nature for you. She always lets you know, just when you think your competent, respect is still required.

Don't feel beaten, sounds like you've achived, and learned some respect. Bet you will do it all again!

Happy new year have a beer!!

Rivers and currents make it much harder for learning, so don't be too hard on yourself!
If you have not spent a fair bit of time on a trainer kite, get one and put some hours into learning the finer skills of kite control, it will definitely speed up your on water learning curve!
