I was just reading another post on here about people short tacking , I don't know what it is . And obviously I should so i don't do it
Is it when your first riding behind someone and they turn and you turn before them so that you are now in front of them ? If so is it reasonable to do it when your 100,s of meters behind them as some people at my beaches like to ride so far out in a straight line then come in and then just go out again , I'm talking 2 klms it seems dangerous in light wind , also I like practising turns and jumps etc and haven't learnt not to try back rolls in the middle of the ocean as you can lose your board so have just been chilling within 500 meters of the beach , is this the wrong thing to do if I keep my distance and don't slow anyone down or get in anyone's way ?

I just googled it and found it on an older sea breeze forum
So it's if your coming at another kiter head on and then do a turn right in front of him / her and cut them off / slow them down ruin there run ,
I haven't done this thank god and wouldn't dream of it
This is common sense
Are ther any other newbie isms that cause problems on the water I don't want to be that guy
Can now understand the frustration of the guys dealing with the 2 French guys doing it all day
That Shiyte is un called for

Thought I would post that up as there is an important message in there (not just good music) about motor power giving way to sail power correctly....

Another issue that is relevant to ur question is when 2 kiters are approaching the beach on the same tack, one behind the other, the kiter closest to the beach needs room to turn, so kiter behind please give way and allow plenty of space....

Short tacking is particularly relevant when there is a circuit going. Everyone follows each other in, does a trick and then quickly heads out the back to have another go. It works really well as long as everyone waits their turn. It usually occurs behind a rock groyne where the water is smooth allowing tricks to be done without the problem of chop.

The problem occurs when someone decides to not wait their turn and cut in front of another rider, go in, do their trick and then head out. It slows up the whole process and effects everyone in the chain.

Quite often the short tacker is inexperienced and simply rides up to the beach, does a slow turn around and heads out through the mob coming in rather than bear away and become part of the chain again. It is also often someone with an overinflated expectation of their own ability and consistantly crashes their kite whilst trying a trick way beyond their ability and getting in everyone elses way while they relaunch.

A short tacker may simply hog the corner behind the groyne where the flat water is and not allow anyone else access.

Another example is someone who may be 100m down wind of you and turns around at roughly the same time but proceeds to push hard up wind to a point where they block your trick or smooth exit.

All these examples lead to tension on the water.

A vital point. I call that Long Tacking and they're real bad at doing it here.

Good point. I need room in the transitions since I like to do carving turns from toes side when coming into the beach. If you come into the beach down wind of me there is a chance you will meet me on my way back out. So please watch the guy up wind of you and don't force your way to the beach before turning around on the spot.
