Hi there,

I've just started to kite and i'm having trouble moving whilst standing up on board, i seem to get up and then i manage to face plant. Any tips would be appreciated.I dont think i'm choosing the best conditions to learn in.

Best tip is...check out the newbies tips and tricks section, and choose better conditions to learn in!

Lean back, put more power through your kite and focus on putting pressure on that back foot.

If it is windy enough you shouldn't need to move you kite too much after the initial few bursts to get you up. Watch video's on kiting. There is some really good instructional videos out there. Boost, I think is one. But just check the shop for what ever they recomend. They are gold.

Try not to think of too many things at once, it gets confusing. The main mistake I see beginners making is to be overpowered. As soon as your up and there's enough wind, bar out a bit and let the kite fill and find a sweet spot, probaly about 10.30 or 1.30. Most people feel like they're hanging on for their lives so tend to hang on tightly to the bar and if you haven't got weight on your heels you will face plant. Once planing, try and slow down a bit and gain some control. Slow down be leaning back against the kite onto your heels and control the power through your bar, in and out. Takes time and perseverance, but well worth it, good luck.

Point your board downwind. If its side-on you have only 2 options face-plant or bum-splatt. I spent about a month doing both till someone took pity on me and gave me this tip.

Save the side action till you are up & going then concentrate on your back foot.

Second vote for point board downwind. If you get a bit too much power on your launch, if you're already pointed downwind you'll just get pulled downwind. If not you'll face plant unless you depower &/or lean back. Only when you're in position should you head up/across the wind.

Sorry to pimp but our Progression Beginner Instructional DVD might be of help as we have a chapter which covers both the waterstart but also your first runs.

Unfortunately there is a lot of causes for the problems you are having - maybe get someone to take a video of you and then post it and we can give you a better idea of what you are doing wrong?

My favourite tip for when I see beginners struggling, and which seems to get results, is show them where to throw the kite and tell them to point the board at the kite. And don't even think about taking an edge until you get the hang of that.
LESS TO THINK ABOUT IS GOOD.
