Take more lessons. One isn't really enough to make you competent. You should finish your initial lessons, maybe 3-5, feeling ready and capable of kiting on your own.

The question that needs to be asked is how much time did you spend on a trainer kite. If you have been flying a trainer for a long time and are confident at controlling a kite then maby one more lesson would be a good idea. After that just just post up your available times you can go out and someone will be keen but DONT try and self launch just yet.

thanks for the advice.I am going to have more lessons but thought i might give it a go a few times by myself. The instructor said that I had the hang of it. I think it's the thought of embarrasment that is putting me off at the moment as where we go EVERYONE can see you and I am pretty shy as it is.

Just a thought. If you're having trouble finding people to kite with join the local kite association NSWKBA. That way you'll be kept informed about events, weekends away, that sort of thing. And don't be shy on the beach. Most kiters are friendly and helpful. We want all kiters to be capable and competent so that our sport has minimal negative impact on other beach users.

Everyone feels that way when they get into something new. Just be honest about your abilities, ask questions, and be safe. If you do that, anybody that gives you a hard time for learning, is just a knob. You'll find most people are really cool. As KIT33R pointed out, your state association will give you a lot of benefits, not the least of which are social events so you can get to know a few people.

Have fun and be safe.
