Do Pulley-less bridles make for a more direct feel - ? Are there any kites on the market with pulley's that actually create a more direct feel.... ?

Hey Addikt,

Most pulleyed bridle kites have a less direct sort of feel but it can be hardly noticeable in some kites depending upon bridle geometry and number of pulleys.

Kites like early bows, early Bandits, switchies, the Combat Wave, and many others were really bad in that the kite had almost no feel as to what it was doing in the sky.

Some of the latest are really good like the new Core GTS has a very positive feel despite the use of pulleys.

Some of the worst ones were like the cross bow and early Halo's which used pulleys on the bar as well as pulleys on the kite, these had no feel at all and IMHO were pretty ordinary in camparison to todays new kites.

The new griffin chimera comes with the option of riding with or without pulleys, sounds like an interesting concept. the kites designer actually prefers to ride it with the pulleys.
This quote was taken from the chimera thread:

Sizing sounds good, I prefer the pulley set up, you get more depower and almost 100% depower if you let go of the bar which is great for safety and depowering on waves, or lock in the bar with the stopper ball. There are 3 turning speed adjustments fast to slow, I suggest a small bar for the 8m 45cm and med bar 53cm for the 10.5.

The non pulley is a different feel, good for kite loops and the old style C direct connect feel. With pulleys you get faster turning, more wind range and more depower. Some riders prefer no pulleys, some prefer pulleys.

Kite comes default with pulleys, with a hot swap non pulley bridle line in the bag.
Details of the chimera will be online shortly.

A kite with pulleys is always going to have a much better range, adjust to gusts much better and not have sections of the canopy flutter through turns etc. If safety is the concern, then every manufacturer should use pulleys that have a safety gate system should they break (at least run a line over the top of the pulley -like the pulley saver). I think front lines with pulleys, direct rear lines is surely the best option.

totally agree with your front bridle and rear line direct attach thoughts .Pulleys /rings have their place particularly on the le bridle .Just because they have sucked for years on certain kites their is no need to throw the baby out with the bathwater .

The Zeeko Krush has a pulley less bridel , we have tested it in O.K conditions but will have a better idea tomorrow as we have the first real seabreeze for Geraldton 25 knotts and a 3m swell forcast.
Will post a report soon
