am just a newbie and wanted some advice on kites. which is better a gk sonic/bow kite or a best yarga kite. have had heard good and bad about both these kites reference appriateness for beginners

Hi

There are limited flat style kites around at the moment so an
honest and conclusive review would be hard to get.
I have had a few sessions on the cab crossbows and alot on the yargas
so here is my take on it. Bear in mind, I represent Best (Yarga's) so you should take this feedback lightly and I recommend you actually talk to several experienced kiters down at the beach and possibly try stuff out before making any decisions on gear.

In principal, a flat kite is better in regards to instant depower
by sheeting out the kite. I found this on the crossbow.
It also possible to get more 'range' from these style of kites.
However, the actual sweet or performance range is still similar to traditional kites imo.
The flat kite hype is all relatively new and everyone is excited about it. But it is new, and as you can see on kiteforum, problems are starting to surface in some areas.

Teaching/learning techniques on these kites are also slightly different so bear that in mind.

So in short, flat kites offer more 'instant' safety, but are relatively new so issues need to come to the surface.

Standard style kites (eg yarga) have been around a while and have stood up to the test of time. You can also get almost 3 kites for the price of one flat kite too!

My advice:
-Ask the local guys (not brand or shop affiliated)for their take
-Try before you buy
- Maybe wait and see the flat kites from other brands which are coming in the next couple of months from companies like Liquid Force, Caution and Slingshot. And wait and see if there are any problems down the track.

any current model kite from any brand suitable for beginners to intermediates "will with careful practice"suit your needs.
important considerations are resale,after sales service and warranty.
your local kite shop is a good start.
would you service your new car with a part time mechanic with an ego?

maybe not if it was vw touarag, but then again resale will be bad on it anyway so it probably doesn't matter..

My friends and I, all have learnt on Best Yarga's. I figured that a first kite is going to cop a fair beating and the Yargas are cheap enough to use as a throw away kite if you outgrow it. My Yarga has been great, but I'm starting to look at other kites now that I don't crash as often.

Hey Rolf, dont be too surprised when you find that the more pricey brands arent any better than the Best's

I cant fault my quiver of Nemesis's's's & had a 9m Yarga previously that was great.

i luv my B&B (baby best) (8 nemisis) one of the best kites i have ever flown, i also own a slingshot fuel so that is saying something, both great kites.

im no begginer but i still give my kits a thrashing, they love it

Mmmmm! Such a nice topic. I have Tried and tested, Gk Sonic, Best Waroo, Yarga+Pro, Switchbade, Crossbow, Turbo Diesel, Link, Ozone... forget name, Flexi-Atom & Ion .. etc. Each one has it's let-downs and +'s. I would go for the Yarga, as the GK sonic, depending on the year of the kite is downright ridiculous(you can't reach the bar if you let go of it).The Yarga will get you up to a sufficient level to take the next step up to a newer type bow or hybrid kite. It's really difficult for you beginners to know what to choose as each rep will try to sell you their kite, and as reviews go , well some of them get a little too much cream on top, depending on the company. I know this from dealing with some of the testing department in the UK. Find a good instructor and ask him what he recommends to teach with and usually you will find a good kite to progress with. Great to see more chicks into this sport. Love it.

If u r newby, then buy used kite. u are more likely to rip ur kite and spend most of ur time relaunching kite.

While the sonic may not have been the best choice for an absolute beginner I can't help but think that your comment is a little off. If you can't reach the bar after letting go of it then just pull in the central line until you get to the bar. Its not hard as there isn't any pressure on the front lines when the bar is released. The sonic may take a little more technique to fly to its full potential but the rewards if you do are excellent.

In any case it doesn't really matter - this thread is over a year old!

The Sonic as a touch more technical to fly than other bow kites or a C kite. Having said that, if you can handle it then it is the best 06 bow/hybrid/sle kite by a long way.

The Sonic is quite easy to stall so some newbies or heavy handed riders can have trouble with it. The trim adjuster and stopper ball thingy are also acquired tastes. I quite like the trim adjuster and I stopped using the stopper. The bar pressure is so light the kite is effortless to use. If you let go of the bar you have about 10 seconds to pull in the chicken loop and grab the bar.

I have not used the Yarga but I have used a fair number of C kites and the Yarga is supposed to be pretty good. In general C kites can be easier to fly but harder to relaunch and much harder to control the power when you get overpowered, which is all the time for a beginner.

Also, unless you have actually used C kites and have a strong preference them then you would have to have rocks in your head to buy anything but a bow/hybrid/sle. Everything is so much easier and safer and more fun on a flat kite.

I currently have a Switchblade II. It is a great kite. Less technical to fly than the Sonic, super stable and super easy to use. One pump. No pulleys on the bar. Decent stopper ball thingy. Very grunty. I like it a lot. It is more expensive than the Sonic but it is easier to buy and probably easier to sell when you want to move it on.

mmmmmm.....

I am missing something here as there are over 12 months between posts. The post was from 2005 and sat dormant for a year

I certainly hope Brischick has managed to sort out a kite for herself by now
