Hi,
Started this after seeing the great photo's at Parham.
Looking to purchase a camera for water use for kiting and surfing.
Just a note (bit off track) but was surfing at Middleton on Sunday and a whale surfaced within metres of four surfers, including me!! just fabulous to watch.
Also rigging to the kite and board etc.
Any advice?

I've been using a camrig ( www.camrig.com ) with Pentax Optio W60. It does the job, but I'm sure there are better options out there. There have been plenty of seabreeze topics on the subject. As long as the camera's waterproof you could make your own kite mount out of an old camera case and some Velcro straps.

Hey Jim,

the two cameras most mentioned are the Pentax Optio W60 as talked about by Chaps and the GoPro cameras.

A search of the kitesurfing General section for the last year produced a good range of discussion

Just a further quick note on this(make sure you search the forums as there will be a heap more info).
The GoPro and Pentax are the only cameras in the price range that support interval shooting (GoPro 2sec up and Pentax 10). All the rest (Olympus, Canon, Nikon, Sony etc) do not support this so are useless for kite mount photography.

Question:

As I'm interested in cameras myself, I followed Chaps link to camrig and from there I looked at some of the Panasonic cameras they listed as compatible. In their specs it says "Continuous Drive - Yes (3.7fps)". Doesn't that mean they can take 3 shots per second on continuous basis?

The drive mode they are referring to is "burst" shooting mode. It's the number of frames per second the camera can take if you hold your finger down on the shutter button.
This Pentax

will take a shot every 10 seconds once you press the shutter button and is a perfect companion to the kite rig.

The GoPro seems to be the one to go with. There are plenty of mounts for either board or kite lines.

www.kitehero.com is the site I've used to get the mounts.

Apologies, I'm still logged in as Saksa. Jordo here...

I'm a big fan of the GoPro. A few reasons. The market seems to have demanded a HUGE range of mounting options which various manufacturers have met well... Kite, pole, bike, board, car etc. Plus with the mounts available, me and Chopsy have built cable dollies, steady cams and various other options.

I've also snapped my GoPro off my board, it survived. Hit trees on my bike, it survived. Fallen off my skateboard onto it... It survived.

720p is the lowest resolution, which is about 30% better than DVD for instance. However, this leaves you with a severe fisheye effect. Running it at 1080p tends to flatten it out a bit and when mounting it in your kite, as I do often, you can zoom in when editing and you don't lose the quality.

Also, there's a 3D setup for them which requires another GoPro and a special waterproof case.

Ummm... What else. Oh, for editing, I use iMovie on my Mac but have just changed over to premier pro which I'm loving. Simplicity is definitely imovie's bag but if you know your stuff to a little degree, or have done some audio recording before with say cubase or similar, premier pro will probably make a lot of sense to you.

Hope this gives you a bit more info mate. Good luck with whatever you buy.
