Hey

The state goverment is attepting to errect 4 different wind turbines near gladdy road on the roof of the somerton slsc for a 12 month trial.

These turbines will be 4m above the roof highest point so say about 15m + off the ground level and up to 20m off sea level, and will range in diameter from 5.5m to 2m

The state goverment have rushed it though council as a confidential item and there is some talk around the neighborhood that it is a done deal before it even goes to community consultation.

There are two public consultation periods at the somerton slsc the first scheduled for tuesday 1st september 4-8pm with the official presentation at 7pm, and saturday 5th september from 10am-1pm

I urge as many of you to attend as possible as i personally belive this is going to look absolutly disgracefull and that wind turbines should not be erected in a suburban area.

Secondly i worry that if this gets through, it will set a precedent for what they can do and over the next few years and these turbbines may start appearing all the way along the coast

As consistant beach goers, i believe this should be a concern for everyone as we want our coast to stay attractive.

I hope to see as many of you as possible and if anyone wants more info they can contact me on 0401737294 or pm me

Thanks

Jarrad

Good work Jarrad,

That would look cr@p. There is plenty of places to erect wind turbines that wouldn't look out of place and an eyesore.

Hoping to make it down.

I agree that turbines in residential areas are (can be) ugly, however they may become something that people learn to love. Jetties where considered eye saws until about 100 years ago when people started photographing them, they then became an attractive part of the beachscape.

Likewise there are many people that think 30 kites in the air destroys the beachscape, even though everyone on here loves it. I would like the believe that rows of turbines harnessing green energy for the city may have some attractive attributes.

Also, the cost and return is negligible right now. Currently most wind farms use more energy to produce and maintain than they ever generate, however with out prototypes we will never reach a technological level where they will, hopefully, become a green power supply.

a little now for a lot later I think

I think Jarrads point is there are plenty of other spots that would be preferential- I agree with Tom on the green energy front but I think the concerning thing is rocking up to the beach one day and finding these things everywhere.....

There was a large opposition to them at Aldinga, mainly due to the noise they make, I would not have thought they would even try to install them in a residential area....

Heaven forbid that we should harness wind power! Oh noes... what will they think of next?

Seriously, I would much prefer to see windmills than power stations, any day of the week.

I am with you Jarrad, there are better places for this sort of a project.....

Once again- nobody is saying the idea isn't good just the proposed placement.

Seems to be a few nimby tossers around, how will this be so evil? Why aren't more been put up along the coast, along with seagull sashimi restaurants would give SA some valid carbon credits, you wowsers worried about getting ya kites caught after some fail?

I do agree that they are ugly, and don't really fit in residential areas, but might be a necessity that we all have to get used too. No one likes cell towers but we like mobile phones. Same goes for electricity.

I think I would rather them in residential areas, leaving the natural coastal areas untouched. Essentially residential coastal areas have already destroyed the beach scape. Can you imagine if they started putting them down along pondi on yorks..........

You can tell the wind speed and direction just by looking at them.... I want one.

I used to be able to see one from my office window. Now I have to check the web.

Apparently city locations are too inefficient, but I bet the coast would be better.
I would be surprised if you could hear them over the sound of the waves.

The real question is - why are we only just doing trials now? these things have been around for years.

To be honest I thought they would look alot worse than this. They aren't that big and hopefully won't be noisy.

Not a fan of the tax payers paying for it (especially now I'm a tax payer!!!) haha

bout time govt spent the $ on lking at renewable energy. Don't like dryland parks either? Time to shift your aesthetic view point and help solve the problem rather than the time honored NIMBY syndrome.
Somewhere in the forum someone posted a chart of the windiest spots in oz, coincidentally on the coast where we all r enjoying the wind.
They may not be the answer but its a step fwd

big wind turbines only just make a positive impact on energy and these are loacted in the windest parts of australia

these 4 wind turbines comined will save not even $1000 of electricity per year... and cost is 300k

i believe that there are smater ways to renewable energy... solar termal, hyrdro

If they are going to be spending 300k they could at least provide an accurate wind reporting system online and via phones. This way it would provide an even greater service for southern beaches and wouldn’t cost any power to supply.

I agree with tom on this! We seem to be to conservative on issues surrounding aesthetics, energy, and water. While I was in Holland last year, the North Sea is full of Windmills! A beautiful sight while kiting in freezing waters. A couple of small winds turbines on top of the club rooms are nothing compared to a energy hungry de-sal plant! Who paying for that aswell?
