Does anyone have the details of any decent kite repairers (preferably around the northern or central part of the metro area or up gawler/ barossa way)?

Interested in any contact details, and info about quality of their work, type of repair, price and length of time taken.

Thanks

looking into it right now (see my other post in regards to noobness)

I will PM you some details as soon as I find out the best quality and closest option. As you may know that onboard send their repairs down to the east coast. This may be that they feel the best repairer is there - not sure but my repair was quoted as being up to $300 which is getting close to the value of the kite so naturally i am looking at other options.

i'll try to keep you in the loop when i hear something.

The Sail Loft @ 435 Military Rd. Largs Bay Ph. 8341 7655.
Can fix leading edge and canopy repairs.
Their work is first class and the price is fair.
A lot less than $300 for any kind of repair.
I'm not sure how Onboard could not know about this place.
There is also another repairer down south.
Hope this helps

Get a pic of the damage and send it in to Moti Levy for a quote. His quotes include return shipping so there is no extra cost.

He is very fast and quality of repairs cant be beat. I know he is not in the Metro Area or even in SA but you can normally send a kite and get it back in around a week.

Or if it is going to cost more than it's worth just check out the buy and sell section for some good deals.

This may be the cheapest way for SOME repairs:

http://www.kitepower.com.au/catalog/category_325_Repair_Kits.html

But I haven't tried it, so I can't vouch for it. If anyone has please let us know.

Lol, im thinking that if he has been quoted $300 for repair, it might just be a bit past the sticky tape and glue quick fix. But you never know that stuff is meant to be real good.

I think you'll find he tore the bladder in half ? so I'm guessing around half the repair cost is for a new bladder.....Phil does good work, any sail maker will do the cloth repairs but Moti might repair the bladder as well...worth a try.

As usual Loverboy, you are extremely close to the mark with your insight to the situation.

SpawnofFossl has a tear along the leading edge on his crossbow 3,
approximately 450mm long adjacent to one of the bridle attatchment points, about 2 mtrs in from one wingtip. The rent ends in a "T" tear running around the LE about 80mm.

The bladder has two jagged tears, 200mm and 100mm spaced approx 80 mm apart.

I will be delivering the kite to Phil tonight. I will have a chat to Phil before I release any of his contact details.

See ya in the seaweed
Fossil

PS. any noobs or parham punters, the Parham tide is good from mid afternoon Saturday till high tide at 7pm. wind approx 18 to 20 kts.

Ryan & I will hopefully be venturing out for another learning experience (for both of us).....we will be the ones sharing my green switchy

Personally, Phil McConnachi all the way. That dude is genius with a sewing machine. He's got a facebook. Try that. Doesn't have thi Kiteshop anymore but I know he's still making kites in his home. Could be up for repairs. Think he's Woodville kind of direction.

Beeeeep.

BigBlock, you are quite right...
The leading edge can t be sticky taped, it must be stiched up by somebody who knows what they are doing...
...but I was looking at the leading edge bladders they have for $69.95...

http://www.kitepower.com.au/catalog/product_17876_FixMyKite_Leading_Edge_Bladder_cat_325.html

Also they have some bladder patches that they claim they successfully fixed 50cm bladder rips with - which they sell per metre:

www.kitepower.com.au/catalog/product_17085_Tear_Aid_Bladder_Repair_Tape_cat_325.html

I personally prefer to buy a new genuine bladder to replace a ripped one.
But sometimes there is just no stock in Australia. Once I had to wait for quite a while for one of our kites to be fixed because at the time Cabrinha didn t have any bladders for that particular size and model in stock.

I have actually kept the ripped bladder from that kite, so if we are unlucky enough to ever need another one of that type, I will be tempted to do this:

Good feedback thanks guys. If anyone else has details, feel free to keep 'em coming.

Would love to catch @ Parham sbray, but the wife's going to the cricket so I'm on duty. Small price but. Will have to get out later am if the wind gets up in time for the tide or maybe try Thompsons depending on direction Sun am. Had a great session @ Parham wednesday afternoon on 10m.

Anyone who's kited at Thompson's before, what's the best place to park/ setup? Is it hard packed like Parham is out to the beacon? Any channel/ is it rocky/ any local issues etc? Cheers

Briz, this link shows the heat method, which I have used, and is similar to how the bladders are actually made. Most bladders have some spare material at the ends to use as a patch.
Good luck!

Briz and interested others,

Dropped the kite to Phil last night.

He quoted a great price for Ryan's repair and was not phased at all by the type of damage. He says he will probably have it finished within the next 4 days.

He says he can repair almost all types of kite damage.

Phil will not be available do repairs from mid March to September 2011. So don't bust anything till the end of the year!

I will not post Phil's contact direct on the forum pages but Phil was quite happy for me to forward his phone contact.
I will send it via Seabreeze PM to any who need his skills.

PM will be on its way shortly BRIZ.

regards

Hi crew,

just to clarify.

we send all basic canopy and cloth repairs to a well known sail maker in adelaide. (who has built many national and world title winning boat sails, so there is no question his quality is A1).

any structural repairs are sent to the Moti Levi kite repairs ("east coast") as he is by far the best kite repoair within australia.

Im unsure of any other repairs in the state, thus including "the loft" and semaphore.

if you have found an alternative option then fantastic.

Considering a LE bladder + sail materials + freight + man hours, i think $250 - $300 is quite reasonable.

any problems dont hesitate to call the store.

cheers

My kite & I had an altercation with a reef anchor & a boat earlier in January, resulting in 3 savage tears in the canopy of my Switchy

Sent it to Onboard and had it fixed rapidly at an excellent price.

+1 for Onboard's local repairer.

My personal preference is to choose local people where possible if the results are as good as I have experienced.

No slight on Moti as I have read many articles related to his skill as a top repairer.

There is no need to red thumb Onboard, they just provide another choice. I've used their services a few times and I was quite impressed with the quality of repairs and the prices they charged me were very reasonable.

This post just keeps on going !
We must have all had a few blowouts along our usually merry way.
A few points have come up since my first response to this post that I just had to clear up.
The correct name for the buisness at Largs is "Adelaide Sail Loft" and they are in the white and yellow pages for all to see.
Perhaps I'm ignorant but I thought I wouldnt need to run it past them first.
They don't replace bladders just do a great job on stitching.
You can save money by replacing the bladder yourself which is very easily done for the home handy kite man with a little help from the internet.
Always a thumbs up for Onboard

Apologies for putting icons next the price but it really depends on what you're after with a second hand kite.

Unfortunately its the nature of all business these days in that everyone is going to shop around for the bang for your buck. Having said that, If I had a brand new high end kite purchased for close to 2k then sure I would have not hesitated to throw $300 at a kite repair to ensure I had the best repair possible from one of the best repairers in the country.

The truth is that if you look at it a different way and you had a second hand Daddo that you purchased for $800 from your buddy and you were using it to practice rally driving in the paddock out the back, you probably wouldn't throw $400 at it for a professional tune up or repair.

On the other hand if your $35K semi-pro rally car that you race several times a month had an issue and you had to fork out $1500 to repair it you probably wouldn't hesitate because A. You could afford that price for the car and B. you want it performing at the top end.

I am a learner and i am going to smash my kite while I am learning and probably upgrade after a couple of years practicing.

The truth is I will most likely buy my upgrade through onboard as I know how they support the local community. At no point is this thread a dig at onboard or their service as I am always greeted with a smile and they are always willing to answer my noob questions with solid advice
