Hi GJOchoa,

Did anyone catch up with you down there mate?

What kind of gear do you have? ie, what size kite and board do you have?

Just curious, perhaps I can help.

Give me a call some time and I can probably meet you down there for a session and help you out!

Speak soon.

Yes Ill add to that, I was there yesterday and would help.
There were a number of new guys out there but if you want help more detail is required eg kite type color etc or ask around!.
Did try to give some advice to some guy training another guy on an underinflated kite and was not getting too far. But he didnt want another opinion.
One small thing is if you use the rear foot strap as a handle and put your front foot in the other strap, instead of the grab handle I have found it a lot easier.
Good luck Jim.

Would it be worth if there are a few rookie guys down there that a Rookie session is organised for an afternoon or day a week?

One time in which new guys can go to the same area and kite while helping each other out.

Maybe a couple of experienced people to kite with them just to keep an eye.

As a beginner I found it just helpful to kite in the same area as more experienced guys cause I figured if I got it wrong, someone would help me... or tell me what I was doing wrong!

Hi mate,

A guy with a blue kite (don't remember his name, :S I'm pretty bad with names) help me out with the launching, then I spent like 2 hours trying to stand up and keep the power so I could ride :P I managed to stayed up for a few meters... When I was packing my kite a talked a little bit with a guy that I met when I had my second lesson... I really like this community, everyone is quite helpful and friendly :D I got a 10m Cabrinha switchblade and a 136cm board...

jamdfingr's idea is awesome... a rookie session would be really good... As a rookie that's my biggest fear, something happening and not having someone around to help :P

@pneucube: I'm alright with the board part. I just use the handle get my rear foot in and then the front one... I'm struggling with keeping the correct power after getting up so I keep riding...

If anyone wouldn't mind a rookie on weekends session let me know so I could tag along :D 0431 845 052

I'd be keen to join in on that too. Have yet to have a go at Largs yet, but am keen to try it out.

Jordan - you planning on going out some time soon?

As one of the other newbies floating around, I reckon it would be a great idea to find a good way to buddy up with others starting out. The chance to get a bit of advice and overwatch from someone more experienced would be a bonus.

Seems to be quite a few out there doing the right thing: having lessons, trying to learn to kite safely & get over the up-front learning curve ... I'd be keen to meet others doing the same.

Is anyone keen to go out for a session on friday Arvo? I am hoping to leave work early and go somewhere for a kite. I can go to grange, westlakes beach (100 military rd) or just north of semaphore if anyone else is keen to go out. I'm not that experienced but can help newbies launch, rig and just generally keep an eye on each other. Let me know if you are wanting to go out!

Ill probably be there from 4.

I normally go to Westlakes beach (Tennyson Beach) as there are not many peope around there but am open to suggestions of other locations.

I see alot of guys going to grange so that may be a suitable alternative?

I finish working on fridays at 430 (at the airport). I had my lessons and my first "solo" session at Largs Bay. The wind forecast for this friday is not looking good :S Don't know about Grange or Westlakes...

How busy is it down at largs?

Yeah, I saw it was only 12 kts but if the seabreeze kicks in, it should go to about 16-17 I would think.

Its hard to tell...

Yep, I guess it would be good to go there and check it out. That's what I did last sunday and it paid up :D It's not really busy, I'm ultra rookie and I had enough space to play with my kite and practice my water start without bothering others...

Well, I think the best bet is to stay tuned to the forecast and try to work out where the best spot to go will be on the day.

I will keep and eye on this forum and let you know when I figure out where Im going.

Cheers!

Great to see new crew keen and enthusiastic but just on the side of caution make sure u guys are careful. Generally if the wind has a bit of Easterly in it you need to be careful along the metro coast as its blowing cross-off shore and if something happens you could find yourself being blown out to sea. Its not as bad the further you go down the coast as places like Tennyson, Semaphore and Largs wrap around a bit so it holds the Easterly a little better but its still worth keeping that in the back of your mind when you see Easterlies on the graphs. If its a warm day and the seabreeze kicks in you wont have an issue!

When looking at the graphs here on SB i often split the difference between the Airport and Outer Harbour. The airport is inland so is often a bit protected and can do funny stuff off the land, especially if there is some Easterly in it, and Outer Harbour is taken from Black Pole which is 10km (i think) out to sea. Split the difference and u usually get a pretty good indication if its rideable at the beach.

GJOchoa also remember that generally anything under 15 knots and ur going to struggle to get up and riding anyway so make sure its around the mark when you go out. Obviously this is weight and kite size dependent but if its around 15 knots its going to make it a lot easier, so dont get too frustrated if u cant get up and riding if its below 15 knots.

Just a few tips and things to consider. Happy riding guys!

Thanks Rooboy.

Yeah, I have had days where it has a bit of easterly in it that I have elected to windsurf instead. Atleast on those, you can pull your sail in and paddle back to shore.

I am hoping with the temperature that we will get enough seabreeze to swing that easterly back onshore but as I said, will look at the forecast on the day.

Thanks mate!

Yep, you definitely need a saksa tag to kite largs to north haven. Even kiting the unrestricted beaches it is a good idea to have membership as it covers you from nailing someone else! You would get a nasty fine if caught without your tag!

Hey jamdfingr

I have a seat harnes and a waist harness, do you recon I could convince old mate handing out the fines that my current tag is in the boot of my car wilst wearing an old one?

Was good to see someone kite a long way down wind to help out a struggeling fellow kitter with a deflated kite down at Largs this arvo. Keep the positive vibe men. (and women)

Hey guys. I'm still keen to come and join in if it's ok! I've paid up my SAKSA membership but haven't got me tag yet. Is simply being a member enough or is it the tag itself that is the requirement?

Unfortunately I can only get out on the weekend which is looking rubbish. Sunday arvo is a possibility though

I paid but I still don't have the tag. I printed the receipt and have it in my bag just in case...

Yeah mate, so long as you have that, you should be fine.

Hope you get some good wind. Yesterday was good down behind the chicken shop.

Nice consistent 18-21kts.....

I have never been there before but will definately be going back!!! Heaps of good locals.

There were a couple of new guys who had a little mis-hap (luckily no one hurt) but I got the feeling that their "lessons" had come from a mate!

If your mate is an instructor or really experienced then that would be fine on a deserted beach but atleast go and see an instrucor for the first two lessons of safety and how to fly the kite properly. This would make alot of difference to how safe you are and then get your mate to show you the board side of things after....

That would be my best reccomendation for us to encourage safety in our sport...

Hey guys,

I'm also a rookie, I've been trying to get down to Largs on suitable days too. I went down yesterday afternoon but it was too windy for me (73kg) with my 11m naish park. I'm planning to go down again this afternoon around 4 o'clock for hopefully slightly lighter conditions.

See yas on the beach :)

Hey mate, was just looking at the forecast and there may be some easterly in the wind today. Just make sure you don't go in anything offshore but I'm sure you already know that.

If you can't get out today, there will be a group of newbies at the chicken shop on Sunday Arvo I believe so might be a good place to be...

Cheers,
