Big thanks to Marcus for towing my kite in, the other fellow for offering to tow me and to Croc for the lend of a harness. (lost my harness hook while winding my lines in the water) Had a good workout - a pulley snapped a loooong way out today at Seaford.. Nice session and good to have so many friends out there to help. Good karma comes around,

POP.

Just a quick follow up for those with pulleys on bridals.. I've lost 3 pulleys in the last few sessions. All of them went under normal flying without any indication that they were about to fail. I'm now replacing all 8 of them. On closer inspection the pin holding the wheel has snapped as the end of the stainless pin can still be seen in the housing. It seems they have reached the end of their design life which is 2 to 3 years. One of these snapping an be a major headache as I have found. In the surf zone it could be particularly nasty - the kite drops out of the sky and you have a loose line all around you in the water. If you have a kite a couple of years old and go out in the surf I'd definitely recommend you replace the pulleys!

POP.

Yeah, sounds nasty - not just in the surf, what about jumping, looping etc. when the load is the highest...

Spend the extra and get Harken Carbo Blocks. These will not fail. Plenty of testing done over the years on my sailing boat. trying to use the smallest and lightest block possible.

Those pulleys were one of the biggest reasons I left the Cabs... you only need to screw up a couple of sessions before you can't be bothered with them.

No worries POP. You were a long way out and looked like you could do with a hand. People have helped me before so I know what its like.

I owe you one sea squirrel!

In defense of the pulley system, one really good feature is that if you do snap a rear line or a pulley, the kite seems to flag and just drops instead of turning into a propeller. This wont happen to a kite with direct connections. Having said that the pulleys need to be better quality. I have been told by an informed source that there was a bad batch of pulleys around 2009.. Perhaps me and Briz were unlucky or maybe they just need to be replaced as part of the maintenance. They seem to have snapped because of corrosion on the stainless pin..

I suspect POP's theory of a bad batch of pulleys circa 2009 might not be unreasonable. We had a pulley failure on a 2009 Cab and it didn't have excessive use (i'd classify the pulley failure as premature). Lucky it wasn't a long swim back!

POP is right, there was a bad batch of pulleys in 2009. The problem was known since about March 2009 but by then most people already bought their kites. Since then the problem was fixed on the 2010 and subsequent models. If it's any consolation apparently only a small percentage of kites was affected, so not everyone will have this problem.

However the important point to know is that if one pulley broke, the others on the same kite were from the same bad batch and more pulley failures usually followed. So if you had a pulley failure on a 2009 cab then its best to follow POP's recommendation and change all of them,
rather then risk wasting more sessions (not to mention getting injured ).

Make a small loop with line that goes around the pulley. If the pulley fails, the line will catch the bridle and you will be able to get back in. I'll get a pic to show you how to tie the loop so it doesn't foul/get in the way (basically a larks head up over the pulley and back through the hole). 20c insurance!

I was thinking about a pulley design that had a metal guard so if the wheel came off the line is still captured.. Interested in your loop idea Wisha... please post pic!
