Hey Tim, i have checked it out in 10m weather and it looked pretty smooth, but not sure if it will be smooth enough for your speed runs. Try putting a post up on the Windsurfing SA forums on Seabreeze, there are a few windsurfers that sail down there that kite as well. They will probably give you some more detailed info.

Cheers Croc

PS, for the new crew, this spot is completely off shore and not recommmended for anyone but experienced kiters only.

Hi Guys - just came across the post - hope you don't mind me invading the thread - no expert but have sailed the funnel as often as I can when its on (live down that way) for the past 5 years or so
The funnel is one place that can be 25knts with huge holes of dead glass followed up with a strong bullet gusts & downward gusts (feel like they're coming from directly above - the place is weird. When its 35 knts its as choppy as f@#k unless really easterly.

Its hard work to sail and most crew use bigger floatier boards and biggish sails cause there is so many holes in the wind - unless its really krankin.

It doesn't hit 35 knts too often - maybe along the Myponga cliffs - and its usually really late in the day (after 6pm) or early morning - best we have had this summer is the 25-30 knt region.

I have seen quite a few kites hitting it and either seeing there kites spin around in the holes and drop in the water or end up half a mile down the beach as they have to head down wind in the lulls - a few guys that sailed there a lot in the past only kite it when its really filled in - which isn't often enough.

Not an easy place to sail / kite - ask the three boys that swam in on Australia day - fun in the gusts - a nightmare in the holes - but when its on with some waves its great fun - and a beautiful part of the world

Cheers

Thanks russh, sounds like a strange spot. I thought it would be radical , looks like Iam going to have to bite the bullet and go down to sandy point in a storm this year sometime.

Genetrix, here's a link to some info on the funnel. I used to sailboard it many years ago and it is not suitable for a speed run. I reckon Murray mouth in a frontal southerly wind would be ideal.By the way, I tried my new 14m Hydra last nite at seacliff and was planeing and going upwind in 6-8 kts of wind. Unbelievable!
