This is something I've been contemplating for a while. It could be a whgole lot of fun - setting out just as the seabreeze is beginning, and riding it all the way across.
Not something I reckon would be good by yourself. You'd need a support vessel, and probably a few other kiters for moral support to help deal with the open water "my good there are some big fish in this stuff" heebie-jeebies. Everyone would have to be kitted up with Camel-Backs or something, and some munchies.
Would anyone be keen to try this over the summer? You'd need a few-day window of opportunity waiting for the right forecast, and someone to donate their time and boat. Everyone going could chip in for fuel/running costs. Could even pre-notify the media, and score a spot on the evening news for a bit of good PR.
I was thinking of trying it between Xmas and New Years; people have time off and the wind should be cranking
Been thinking the same thing. I've crossed the English Channel from Guernsey to the UK which is about 100 miles, this was back in my windsurfing days. We raised a lot of cash for a childrens charity!. I'll be keen as to cross the gulf, its not that far so should be pretty straight forward. Keep me posted...
2 resuce boats I would suggest, things could go wrong,
the boat size and number would depend on the number of kiters in case of total bail out and everyone in the boat,
you would need to consider an open ocean vessel, not a small boat as you might end up rescuing the boat when it fetches up.
Port Lincoln Sailing club and North Haven Sailing crew would be able to give advice on what the conditions are like and what boat would be best. Also these sailors could tell you what happens to the wind half way across, the sea breeze does not travel far out to sea and changes on the 'Burg end, it can drop off to nothing in the middle and or go SE.
Might need some Southerly pattern. Consult an experience North Haven Sailor crew I suggest.
I initially thought a bit further north might be good, but that would make you squarer to the wind, and a bit less relaxed. No opportunity to jibe, so the old left leg would get pretty shagged by the end. From edithburg you can jibe back and forth to rest a bit, but still have predominantly the one tack. Also, with that direction riding switch at high speed across the swells would be a hoot.
If people are keen for further north though, I'd definitely be up for it.
Not so sure about Kingston to Goolwa though - there's a whole lotta coast with no-one able to access it, and lotsa bronze whalers. Although in and out of the surf all the way could be cool
I am keen, not happy to be shark bait but. There are a few arond later in the summer. Its a better line to go from black point, to glenelg, You have more visual land marks as you head across.
Need to look at sponsors, and a few big 30- 50ft power craft for support, its gets big swell, in the middle, even on a clam day.
you of all people (mark) should no that theres only sharks in summer because people look for them, no one cares in winter so you dont seem them, but there still there.
i no of people that have attempted to windsurf across.
the seabreeze tends to be coastal and ofetn you fiund there is nothing in the middle, the direction in a seabreeze also changes for SW on our coast to SE over on yorkes, so a front would def need to be the wind source.
im keen look into it. good convo and ideas being thrown around!
I'm keen. There's also been some banter on facebook about a Port Parham/Ardrossan crossing. Same stretch of water but a little shorter, a little shallower and fewer snapper for the sharks to feed on....Either way, shouldn't be too hard to find a boat or a couple of jet skis for safety.
shiiizzz thats a long down winder! would be fun as but i would get a sore leg! ahaha def would need a few support boats cause lots of things could potentially go wrong half way across..etc! but let me know when its on cause im in!
Totally think if you're gonna do something as out there as this, yep, do the research etc. but also, definitely reckon we should get a charity involved
Rock on!
