Hi guys, I'm about to dive into kite surfing and I start my lessons soon. I think I want to mainly do freestyle riding, with maybe a little bit of freeriding from time to time. I weigh 85-90kg. I tend to pick up new things pretty quick, so would rather not get beginner gear and replace it in 2 months time. So my challenge is I don't want to buy gear and "outgrow" it soon... But I would like gear that is still somewhat easy/ forgiving. Board & kite recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Tim

One kite to do it all..... Options are:

Naish Park
Cabrinha Switchblade

I rode the Park last year and loved it. Plenty ride the Switchblade and love it. New 2014 gear available now or soon depending on the brand.

Boards are as follows:

Cabrinha Xcaliber or Tronic
Naish DUB

All good boards.

It comes down to what you want to pay. Chat to Pete at Onboard for a price 82943691

Hey Timbo13!

First of all welcome to this awesome sport . There are so many brands out there, hence there are many options that would suit your request. I only started kiting about a year ago too (so by no means an expert), but I would say try and talk to as many people as you can, try out your instructors' gear, read some reviews etc. In the end of the day as long as you dont buy a kite pre 2010 (because of wear and tear and safety systems) you can't really buy a kite that won't fly, just different preferences for styles.

The ones martyn mentioned are both really good kites. As for me I learned on a North Rebel last year and absolutely love love love the kite (so much I have another rebel on order ), but again it is a personal choice.

Last I heard Onboard in Glenelg had some good runout deals going on new gear as all the new stuff will be hitting the shelves soon, but besides that, the guys and girls there are awesome and can definitely offer some expert opinion to get you onto a kite you won't get bored off after 2 months

come and say hello on the beach when its windy, always great to meet someone else to share the stoke with

beware tho... you WILL get hooked ;-)

cya on the water

cheers, elise

Check out SAKSA Facebook page. Everyone who kites is pretty much on there. Great place to ask questions and meet the crew.
