The gov is putting in a sand barrage at clayton right now, and from the looks of things it could be a awesome flat water spot. Has anyone kited in the area and be able to provide some wind strength and info on what direction might not be too gusty? heres a pic of the barrage
Holy sh!t batman..... that could be sweet. Looks like its North East of Hindmarsh Island so my guess would be that its going to be pretty flat anyhow. Still be sweet to ride there.
Clayton Bay is flat year round. Wind comes straight across Hindmarsh Island. Predominant wind is SE in Summer which is gusty but in Spring and Autumn can come from the S/W which is flatter land. Hopefully they get some water in there soon!!
About time that there is water again but what a pity.Not the great river I remember learning to windsurf on when I was a grommet always sailed boats there as a kid and have been going there for 35 years.Was a very safe place to sail apart from the mussels in the mud.On a good day the wind accelerates across Hindmarsh Island making the most off the sebreeze.Would love to go kiting there could handle rigging up on the oldies front lawn then go in for good old Mums cooking.
sounds good. I thought the advantage of the new barrage is if needed you could always walk back across to the starting side if the wind was light etc. Also provide a good spot for some photos and filming. If anyone else has ideas on water depth, estimated time the barrage will be finished, and any other hazards please add. (cheers for the heads up on the mussels).
I'm sad to say that most of the mussels are gone. Even at Milang they mostly died off last summer. As much as they slashed your feet, they were a sign of a healthy river.
Tino, that water is shallower at the moment than it looks!! That said, if anyone could ride in 1mm of water, you could.
May be rumour but I heard through a member from the Regatta club that they plan on pumping up to 1.5m (depth) of water into the Goolwa to Clayton side. Bad news for Lake Alexandrina but it means that the open shallows across from the Finniss and Currency Creeks will have water which is far less gusty than Clayton channel. Means you could launch from the west side of Clayton Bay or the east side of Liverpool Rd.
I read the same thing 1.4m above sea level. Milang will never be the same .
I hope they flood the lake with salt water the way it used to be b4 the government made it fresh.
Anyway, the river has a channel running through it(closer to hindmarsh island side) should still be around 1m deep. It's very gusty through that area was never real good for sailing to on off.
Dad went down there on the weekend and was taking to some of the locals. Some are quite sad about it. But anyway, The barrage has come to stand still, as they have come across a fish breeding hole in its path. No matter how make sand they dump, it doesn't fill. Pretty funny that the stupid engineers didn't do a proper site survey and find it and take it into consideration. I am a bit scared this is just quick fix for the summer tourism business of Cayton, Goolwa and Currency Ceek? Is the lower murray going to end up like the wiers along the torrens? Will be fun to kite though!!!!! Great camping ground and the local take away joint does carp burgers! They are damn good!

Popped my head in down there a couple of days ago. Barrage is almost across. Milang isn't looking too flash. The water receded very quickly when they started pumping into Lake Albert and it'll be dry when they pump across Clayton. I have heard that there are plenty of deep spots with springs in the middle so it won't dry up per se. There could be some channels out there that are a metre deep sporting glass flat water come summer time??
I'm thinking the new Milang to Goolwa race will be actross the lake bed on land yachts, buggies and mountain boards to Clayton and then boats and boards to Goolwa. Alternatively do a sprint on motorbikes and jet skis...
Latest pics from this morning... nearly across, apparently will be finished in the next week or so and they will start pumping water with 3 pumps that were being used to pump water into Lake Albert(which has now been stopped)... Milang has grass growing on the launch areas now!

Nice shots Dave do you have any others of the Clayton area.Milang is looking sadder than ever.Pity about the Milang Goolwa yacht race was always a good weekend.Have done the race on cats and sailboards,I guess I can safely say I will never do that again.The last race was a 30knot s/w 4 hrs long no harness, footstraps 6m 1 design borrowed of a mate.Got a 1st place trophy for my troubles. Love to see some more shots from the ultralight. CHEERS EB
Thanks Will... someone has actually towed a skier before but it would be pretty dangerous, besides my cruise speed is about 63kts so you'd have to hang on! I used to tow hang gliders a few years ago but this one has no tow mechanism through the prop...
