Hi guys,

I was told that a lot of kitesurfers tend to have old unused windsurfers sitting around due to the transition from windsurfing to kitesurfing.

I am looking to buy a windsurfing package for under $200. I am a beginner and want something buoyant and not too quick. Sail not too big either seeing as I'm only 65kg. My mate has 3 windsurfers and she said she didn't get any of them for more than 50 bucks, they're not bad either.

So if anyone has an old windsurfer lying around which you want to get rid of, it would be awesome if you could let me know and I'll see what I can do!

Cheers, Michael

Hey Mate,

I have just started windsurfing and had the same thought you did about old gear.

Nothing wrong with second hand, but make sure you get a board that is big enough. I am 90kg and got a 160L big and slow JP Funster. It means that I can stand up on it, pull up the sail and almost just float around on it without any problems. If you get one too small (eg. under 115L), you will spend all your time in the water as you only get stable when you are going.

JP makes the Funster and Funride, I think Starboard makes a nice beginner model too but the problem with these is that once people buy them, they hang on to them for a while.

If you want to take the head ache out of learning, Matt Stringer offers a school at westlakes and has pretty reasonable prices. You can get his contact details through ONBOARD (www.onboard.com.au). I highly reccomend it and ny girlfriend is just about to take some lessons in a week or so. He has all new equiptment and the right gear to start you off on...

Hope this helps at all.

Cheers, Luke.

Micheal, I wish I had known about you earlier! I had been advertising all of my old windsurfing gear on and off for almost a year. I was using the free trader in the Friday Advertiser, and ended up getting someone to buy the lot for $300. It included 3 floaty slalom boards, 7 reasonably up to date sails, 3 booms, mast bases, 3 two piece carbon masts, harnesses, and anything else that the guy could fit in his car! I had made the decision that kiting was my sport, and if at some time in the future, I decided to try windsurfing again, then good quality second hand gear is very easy to buy, but in the meantime, I have so much spare space in my garage.

I have just got back from flying at aldinga airport. They have a complete setup for $90. Its an old style NP Sail and a very light board (so not what I would reccomend as a begginner) with single piece mast and mast extender but if cheap is the ultimate goal, then give them a call on 8556 5404. Its part of an on-going garage sale they are having to raise money for student Pilots. If you just want to go to the airfield and have a look, they will definately be able to help you out. Its all in the hanger.

Again, I dont think I would reccomend this as a beginner setup but it is cheap as hell!

Sounds perfect!!!! I found an excellent board that would suit me as a beginner but it was just the board without a rig, so picking all that up for 90 bucks sounds ideal!

Thanks

Yeah, should set you up nicely. It is old gear but from what I saw it is still useable.

Could even sell the board on to re-coup your costs.

Hope it helped.

Luke.

only problem is it's a long drive to go and pick up! Should be able to sort something out though. Do you think they would let me just buy the rig and forget the board?

EDIT: I'm assuming the board would be bad as a begginner board because of it's stability?

You could try. I dont think anyone there knows much about windsurfing but they have been trying to get rid of it for a couple of weeks now so you could try and make them an offer. If you could be bothered, just get the whole lot and then sell the board on at a cheap price.

Maybe just call them first and find out.

Gaylene is the lady who you want to talk to.

Cheers, Luke.

I just called and she will send me some pictures so I know what I'm looking at seeing as it is too far to go to simply have a look.

Do you think it would be possible to learn at all in it? If it is a bit difficult to begin with I am fine with trying for a bit (not too long though!) until i get the hang of it? I don't think selling/not buying the board will be fine and getting a seperate board. I assume all mast steps are the same???
