Hi there, Next early March, I'll be travelling in Queensland. I'm looking for an exceptional place where I can rest and kitesurf in flat shallow water (easy, no current no wave). I'm travelling with my wife who can do some kitesurf when the conditions are easy, and a 1 year old baby. Ideally I'm looking for an island place from which I could go kitesurfing in flat water and/or go diving close to the coral reef when no wind. Don't know if such place exist, it will be for 5days/a week.
I was thinking about a place in the whitsundays although the diving can be different from the reef. I'm looking for advice regarding an island location, it might be my only trip there in life so I want to make sure I can spot a nice spot and get a great experience.

Below are some images of Lady Musgrave Island, which is off Gladstone. I am pretty sure there is no accommodation there but u can do day trips out to the island/lagoon, which IMO is well worth it. The water at that time of year will still be relatively warm and stinger free! As far as kiting goes, I personally don't know if it's allowed. Maybe someone from up that way could let us know because I would be very interested in going there for a kite/diving holiday myself. I'm also pretty sure it's heritage listed, as I think it is a turtle nesting ground so I'm guessing there will be strict guidelines in place. Good luck trying to find a place like this off the QLD coast, that u can stay on and go kiting from ur front door
You can camp on Lady Musgrave(self sufficient and 2 full fare boat transfers required). The beach is broken coral pieces and there's a good chance of trashing ur gear. Day trips are busy, aren't long enuf and the boat company are very anal and overpowering, and will spoil your day, as they control your movements. Lady Musgrave is out of Agnes Water/1770, which has flat water spots for all wind directions. Do Heron Island out of Gladstone, much bigger island and the lagoon is bigger, 1000+ acres. Nice fine white sand and and has good accommodation(3-3.5star). If the wind doesn't blow there's heaps to do on the island and you can do as you please when you please. Diving is V good. No day trips available but good packages available if you ring the info centre in Gladstone.
If you've got the cash or a keen camper then it's probably going to be Lizard Island for QLD. March is a bit early anywhere in QLD though, it's that inbetween time between sea breezes and trade winds. Maybe Lord Howe would be a better bet?

Great info, thanks mate. Was unaware Heron had a lagoon. So is kiting allowed from both islands, any restrictions?

Thank you for your answers. I realize that my ask is tough. Lady Musgrave looks awesome but i doubt kitesurfing will be well adapted and there's no resort there. Heron Island looks the most promising so far, but the resort is closed until the end of the month and no one picked my call. Lizard Island is nice but out of my leave and further away. I realize finding a resort on a sandy cay is not easy because of the volcanic islands and the presence of dead coral on beaches. I'll keep looking, if other islands you know come to mind i'll be happy to hear about. Also, are there flat water spot on the coast where a resort is? It is not an island but would be a nice alternative. I don't know ...
Thank you in advance for your great tips, this is much appreciated. (Fyi In the carribeans they are islands where you can find a resort on the beach and you can kite from the beach. Sandy beaches. St Lucia, BVI, Bonaire being few of them.)

Yeah you're right about that, trying to work out how I can get over there for a week in August. Got a week in Fiji either before or after that makes it a bit tricky with the restricted baggage thing. When are you looking at going?
