Winter is a no go, just accept that wind sports are off limits or go where the wind is in FNQ. There are places to go but anything with west in it is crap.

If I were to have a wetsuit and the willingness to take plenty of time of work, how often could I get out? I know every year will be different weather wise and everyone has their preferred winds.

But on average how much were you getting out last winter?

Note I'm on the north-side of Brissy.

It can be done first you need decent quiver to cover the constant wind speed changes or damn good kites that have hugh wind ranges eg evo's lithiums and so on and most of all anywhere other than the beaches to kite in, ie lakes rivers bays and islands basically anywhere that in the event of a kitemare your still able to body drag to the shoreline.

I'm not sure what you guys are on about, this past winter I kites 2-3days a week on average, yer some weeks there was nothing but most it was possible.
I kited all this with an 11m switchblade and a twin tip with boots.

Get a lightwind board and you will double your kiting days.

Those westerly winds are pretty exciting once you know how to ride!!!

I'd would get the lessons and start for sure. Generally good kiting here up to about April/May. Then until about Aug/Sept it is hit and miss - mostly miss.
When I first learnt I chased every possible kiting day for a few years. Now many years on I generally give it a miss locally between these times and take a nice holiday for a week to get some kiting in somewhere warmer and with good smooth wind.

You will generally get westerly winds or some variant and this narrows down spots for you. You may though get a nice southerly on the odd occasion.

Starting from the north you have Inskip point on the Cooloola Coast, southern tip of Bribie on the inside, Woody Point on The Redcliffe peninsula, Wellington Point south side and all of the islands if you can get out there. They are the best kiting in winter with the cleanest wind clear water and nice sand but getting back can be pretty full on - you need a decent boat. Other option is to ferry across and stay.

With Westerlies it's generally good to get out as early as possible as they are more steady and stronger due to the land water effect.

It can be wild and gusty and also off shore in spots so take care a kite safely.

SEQ's westelies, although extremely rare, are probably the best quality wind the area can offer. 25kts+ of punchy frontal wind packed full of power.

What are you smoking mate?? we get westerlys a few times a week... can count on a solid 20+ at least fortnightly, last season was a bit **** but still have quite a few good sessions.

I kited at least 3 times a week average id say during winter (some weeks every day others not at all) with a somewhat ridiculous quiver at the time and a couple of boards, take what you can get and sometimes you are blessed with good wind! I was learning this time last year and its definately worth the effort man!! keep at it.
