Hey,
I'm thinking about moving to goldie for a year or two to work and kite.
Problem is I haven't found a good spot guide for the area, so I don't know where to go. The only site I've found is http://www.seqka.com.au/page/kiting-locations, which basically says it's supposed to be good north of south port in the canal.
I'm a pretty average rider, been kiting for 3 years, prefer flat water and wakestyle friendly spots.
Is it possible to kite on all wind directions around that place?
Which season is best/worst? Is it windy kinda all year around or only during spring/fall?
And how many days of good wind do you get on the Gold Coast per year?
All I know is that Gold Coast good for surfing, but I've never really heard if it's a good place for kiting as well.. so please enlighten me =)

yes blizzy, a lot of people kite here and may june july august are touch and go, but the rest of the year is usually fairly warm and breezy. cheers ian.

Gold coast is beautiful place for kiting. Nice people, clean water and good restaurant!
The popular places are Shearwater Esplanade(Runaway bay, google it you will find it)
have sometime strong currency and many boats on weekend but still sweet spot.
The other popular place is Marine parade(near leonrd fox park) many students taking
lessons. Sometimes crowed with many kiters but less boat, weak currency, less choppy.
These two places are flat water area as far as I know, well known areas.
You can kite all beach area with surf but NOT between flags.
We are struggling now? Haven have proper wind since end of April.
During winter time bit tough. Why don't you learn surfing? I took few lessons last few
few weeks was really fun and believe help me to keep my fit!

Hey, thanx for the info!
I thought may-aug wouldn't be so good since it's winter and all, but I guess I can survive 3 months with out kiting. As long as the rest of the year is good =)
How's the wind on an average week in spring/summer/fall?
Can you get a couple of good days per week on average or more?
Leonrd fox park and runaway seem really nice! They must be good spots since they're cut off from the ocean... Are they good for all different wind directions? Or are there any other spots close to Southport that are?

I just moved to Melbourne from the GC but kited there for a couple of years (basically beginner/intermediate, just starting to try jumps). As I understand it, the last couple of years have been pretty bad, relative to "normal," but they're all I know. Still, when work allowed, I was getting out at least twice a week, most weeks, without going out on weekends. (This year was bad from a work standpoint, which is a big reason why I moved.)
I prefered Shearwater park to KFC because it is less tide dependent (beach at KFC is non-existent at high-tide, and the water is too shallow at low tide). With respect to wind direction, as long as you can stay upwind, anything with a bit of easterly in it is generally kiteable, but I'm not aware of anyplace on the Goldie where you should kite on a Westerly.
