These types of questions are quite common. Welcome to kite surfing. If you do it right you will love it. It's a great sport but it requires proper training, practice and persistence. It also requires an amount of passion for you to push through hurdles and be able to glide and enjoy it for what it offers.
Having said all that the first and very first thing you need to do is take all the lessons you can afford to learn the safety aspects of the sport and the equipment. In essence you need to learn kite control and the safety around the beginner stage.
You will be in the water a lot learning to water start and you need to find suitable beginner locations that are specific for you to learn without upsetting other kiters, swimmers, surfers, etc. I do not know the GC but I am sure you already know the spots. Etiquette and respect of the sport is paramount.
After a few months of the above (infact a season or two - did I say be patient and persistent?). Yes. After a while you should be comfortable to take to the water on your own. The key here is get out, get out and get out again. Practice!
One good thing about learning to kite in Qld is the array of spots and cable ski parks on offer. They are not cheap to visit, but it's a good investment to practice board control and to get a idea of what it's like being pulled along the water. Given, that you will not be pulling on the bar like you would in a ski park, but the concepts of being pulled out of the water, edging the board, heel and toe side, and balance with the back foot controlling the board are all concepts essential for kite surfing.
I weigh the same as you, so a kite between 10 to 14 or 15 mtrs should be ideal in 15 to 25 knots. Of course ask your local kite shop for precise advice. Hybrid kites are easy to control and learn and stick with 4 string, not 5. That's a personal opinion as per all of the above.
Also once you love the sport, consider buying a few kites between 8 mtrs to 17 for light winds. You should always take them with you and you will be guaranteed a kite on any given day.
Oh and with lessons, make sure they teach you kite control, body dragging, self rescue and of course water starting, but make sure they teach you all the facets of the wind, your gear and safety above all else. Expect 5 lessons at least.

i had a vector but soon up graded to a switch blade because i felt the vector was a bit gutless. my girlfriend now uses the vector and its perfect for her for learning.
