Unfortunately the wind over here isn't as consistent as in WA, but we get the odd SE blow in winter which will last for a week or so. Having one right now actually. In the depths of winter we often get westerleys (directly offshore) which are a little tricky, there is only a few spots where you can safely kite in a westerley here.

The sunshine coast is tops, if you get a place around caloundra or maroochydore you can easily drive down to bribie island for the westerleys or use the two rivermouths (caloundra and maroochydore) for anything else. I don't know about places further north, maybe mackay or townsville would be a little warmer?

Oh your leaving us aye Sarah !!! ... I recon Port Douglas would be a good spot for you guys depending on your time frame June is the start of the SE tradewinds I think and 4 Mile beach is the main spot , anyway near barrier reef etc so you could have a dive as well maybe?
There's heaps to do there either way to suit you and your friend when there's no wind but that would be my choice for what it's worth.
Check out www.windswell.com.au they are the IKO guys there and would have better wind info if needed.
Best of Luck Sarah and happy travels

(Short time reader, first time writer)

Im in Melb and coming up to Marooch next week (21 May).
Not coming up for anything inparticular except to sample some of the brew as me and a mate got a return flight for $25...too cheap not to go.

Im pretty new to the sport, and havent been out for a while, so im trying to work out if its worth to bring my own kite gear + wettie up there or not. (12m Cabr bow)

What i could gather, any accom near coolum/marooch sounds good. Are there any bay's in particular you can recommend?
We wont have transport, so im trying to get a place to stay within 1km of good kite surfing + bar area.

Also which is the most "reliable" link for wind forecast for the area.

Any advice would be helpful.
Much thanks

For weather details look at the seabreeze site and select the area you want to view.

Alternatively try this site for south east Queensland info

http://www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/wrap_fwo.pl?IDQ11270.txt

Maroochydore would be a good choice and the Cab 12m is fine.

Use Google Earth and enter a search for "Cotton Tree, Maroochydore, Queensland, Australia"

It will display the area known as Cotton Tree at Maroochdore which is an excellent location for kiting and is also close to "drinking action" although I never do that !!!

Enjoy your stay

Thanks Fitzy, thats great qual info.
Google earth link is unreal, i looked for kiters on the water..but none there.

Thanks for the weather link, can you tell me which location i should look at for marooch?
Is it "outheast Coast Waters, Double Island Point to Point Danger:" or "Hervey Bay Waters"? I couldnt work out which is the closest.

Taa heaps

you can't go past cairns i wreckon. good winds this time of year. nice and warm in winter and its only a beautiful hours drive to port douglas. The whole place thrives on tourism so its pretty well set up for newbies. And theres hundreds of freshwater swimming holes

dear sarahcanada.

Check out Cairns.. We operate Kite adventure tours north of this region & from April to November the conditions and location are in our view the best in OZ. Good kite beach and local scene with plenty of support only metres from the beach in the form of Kite Right. (Chris is the owner). He will also give you an unbiased opinion of the conditions and Adventures on offer through Australian Kite Surfari. The Surfari company actively advertises on a regular basis with seabreeze so you can click on the banner to get re directed or go straight to australiankitesurfari.com.au

Contact Ant or Rob.

Customers rave about the adventure and are amazed at the consistent and perfect kite conditions. Hope this is helpful..

If you want the most consistant winds this time of year it has to be cook town. Don't be put of by the seabreeze readings as they are taken from the airstrip which is really sheltered. I normally add 10-15 kts to the cairns wind for what it is actually doing. You do need a 4wd to get to the best beaches though.

Other than that check out four mile beach (southern end) in port douglas the friendliest kiters in Australia are there. I spent last winter there and had the best time.
