Hi, Im booking a holiday at the moment..

Wondering if Port Douglas or Palm Cove would be better in June for kiting?

Do I need to worry about crocs?

Which kites..Im assuming 11m and 14m for a two kite kit?

Many thanks Shannon

Hi Shannon

Port is good in June, Also Yorkeys knob near cairns.
Trade winds that time of year you would use your 11m, but bring both.

no crocs or stingers that time of year.

Good at the islands to Green island (off Cairns)& low island (port Doug)

hope you have fun its a beautiful place up here.

ps also a cable park at smith field cairns on the highways going north

Greetings,

If you want a hire car while up here ring Peter from Palm Cove Car Rental, he looks after kite surfers really well. During your time up here do try and make a trip out to Green Island, if conditions are right it is a spectacular environment with some friendly spots for the family to swim and snorkel. Yorkeys can get some nice little waves along the shore, south of the rigging area, and for some flat water joy, you can quickly upwind to the creek. If you rock up to the rigging area on a windy day there will be plenty of locals for you to chat with, a real friendly bunch up here.

Thanks Studio.

I'm up for two weeks at Port Douglas, will have a car to see a little. I had been looking to just grab from the airport but will give Palm cove a call

Have heard about yorkeys so will try to get in there for a bit and will definately look into Green Island too - thanks for that.

Being from Victoria I am really worried about being eaten by a croc! In June is this likely on open water?

So no need to worry about crocs in Port Douglas?

Am I safer playing golf or kiteboarding!

Port Douglas has very open beaches , crocs as a rule are pretty shy creatures that prefer a bit of mangrove area , finding one on a beach around people is a very rare event . You should be fine going for a kite . There are things to be aware of though in croc country , stay clear of river mouths where there is a lot of mangroves , stay away from creek banks during half light (dawn/dusk ) and if you are camping , camp away from saltwater rivers / creeks , and dispose of any food stuffs / fish / bait etc well away from camp area , and ask for local knowledge as any resident crocs are usually well known . Happy holiday !

I hate crocs. There have been a few round my place lately.

I have a theory about crocs tho. I recon that when they were little, they would have been picked off by birds. So if they saw a 13m kite they might freak out a little bit, especially when it gets tomahawked every 3 minutes. What do you think?

HaHa ! That's a good point ! They are an ambush predator though so typically a noisy active area is not a good place to hunt . Crocs usually take birds , turtles , wounded fish and animals roaming river banks , don't exhibit behaviour that makes you look like prey and you've got nothing to worry about !
