I heard that some Kiters on a Downwinder to Shearwater yesterday caught sight of a huge MF Shark. I wanted to say that I nearly rode straight into a huge Shark and by the sounds in a very similar location just the day before Christmas. Where I was about 100 meters south of the Yellow Channel Crossing Marker just North of Kite Island. This thing emerged up out of the water about 5 meters in front of me, I was not kiting all that fast at the time and heading back to Shearwater after a great Kiting Session at Kite Island. On spotting it I let out a huge expletive and the adrenalin kicked in and I turned on a dime and tacked away fully amped hearding towards the shore at Jennifer Ave, watching to see if it was following me, which I don't think it was but there again the water was not that clear. I am no Shark Expert but judging from the size of the Dorsal Fin I saw, I would say this thing had to be at least 8 to 10 foot long. I have been surfing and fishing most my life of quite some years so I can tell the difference, this was definately no dolphin. If you happened to be one of the guys Kiting that saw the Bitey yesterday Thursday 12 January, I was wondering if you would not mind post messaging me as I believe the DPI and Water Police should be informed of its presence as plenty of people and kiddies kite surf, snorkle, dive, swim and tube off or near the Kite Island / Wave Break area

Hey my name is troy i was the guy that spotted the shark yesterday. I ride a red and black switchblade 11m and a cab caliber with ronix boots.
I saw it at 9am in the morning on thursday, the first time i saw it pretty much under my board towards the southern end of kite island bank where the sand comes to a point created by the weed.
I first saw it and it got a shock and swam away, i then followed it trying the get a better look because there was part of me that thought it could still be a dolphin even though i was 99% sure. Anyway i followed it and got a good look i would say at a minimum 10ft long pointy nose something. 100% sure it was a shark from my second look as it was in knee deep water and both its tail and dorsal fin were out of the water, tail went side to side and the dorsal was pretty chewed up.
I continued to follow it into the deeper water across the weeds towards the mainland but lost site of it. I went and told my friend who was towards the northern end of kite island and then went back upwind to try find it and saw a fin which i followed and this fin ended up being a dolphin.

But no doubt the first was a shark.
The tide was quite high as the most shallow part of the bank was under the water by a coiple inches. Bit scary seeing that,and now i dont beleive the saying where there's dolphins there isnt sharks.

Heh Troy, yes thanks for your report and a fellow Kiter did mention your name to me. My intention is not to sound or be an alarmist as we all know there are Men In Grey Suits in the Broadwater and it is a natural habitat for them. But still I think the DPI and Water Police should still be alerted to the fact of seeing such a large Shark or Sharks spotted in this vacinity where there are plenty of water users of our species. So on the weight of your sighting and mine I will now make contact with those Authorities to let them know for there information and be aware of the fact. Sounds like a splendid idea Troy. Whats wrong with the 11ft Tinny once you catch the 10 footer there is still 1 foot left in the Tinny to fit it in mate. Alternatively you could shove a few scuba air tanks down its mouth and take a potty at it with a flare gun. Now would'nt that make for a good movie

I kite shearwater or Kite Island most windy week days so I will be on the lookout! Maybe this should be posted to the main forum as there are lots of learners trawling around the Broadwater at the moment that may not check the SEQKA forum.

There are dozens in that area at any time. You just can't see them. Especially Bull Sharks.

I saw a fn big turtle on boxing day, near the yellow crossing middle of the broadwater. Deep hole. Like small car sized big, half jumped out of the water in front of me. Would have made an ugly collision.

Oh and lostinspace good work on letting the right people know.
Ive worked on tne broadwater from southport yatch club for years and sailed almost everyday in the deep hole and around, i always knew there were sharks but never actually seen a big one. Every evening a 1m bull will jump and spin but thats all ive really seen.

We got white pointers over here in the west that are quite friendly. At 4-5 meters you would have no doubt about what they are.. You wouldn't be turning around for a second look that I promise you.

Nothing new about sharks except people's suprise to one at your local area..

Nothing new about sharks over this way or even sharks in the Broadwater. This is a big sucker though and kinda the equivilent of having one this big in the Swan R where everyone swims.

Exactly Paradox, the one I nearly ran into is not the sort of fishy you would like to crash land next to, or swim, dive, snorkle near either as people do near this area and the Water Boys in Blue welcomed the info as I gather they and other Authorities in concern like to know if there are some big ones about. Which they were not aware of these particular ones in that area until I informed them. Most locals all understand there are plenty of Noahs in the Broadwater and it's rivers on the Goldy and who knows if my actions and Troyrotors information happen for some reason to help the Authorities in concern and that by chance happens to avoid an attack on some one then it could only be a good thing.

Had a fun moment today.
Kited from shearwater upto wavebreak, the entire way upwind i was working along the banks and the water looked prime for creatures.
I kited for a while at the southern end of kite island .
I was finished up and was about to head back to shearwater, as i was in close to the boats parked the wind was sketchy and my kite dropped out of the sky.
I was around 20m from where i saw the shark but in deep muddy weedy water, completly still waiting for a gust to come to relaunch the kite. I layed in the water for a good 5mins absolutly crapping myself untill a gust big enough finally came.
Once it relaunched i was extremely relieved

Oh and to make it worse there were some guys about 50m away drag netting with heaps of birds around uptide of me.
