Anybody doing this or know anything about it? Anybody going to have a crack? Or given the rather dismal wind the last few weeks and the forecast, d'you think it'll be postponed again?

I'd be keen as mustard in the right conditions, but as I only have a 12m I don't fancy dipping my arse into the sea for 88k if the wind isn't quite there.

This has been organised by a group of guys on the goldy who do this run quite regularly....Matt Carrot, Jamie, Col, Moti, Luke etc. are all very experienced kiters and conditioned for these type of distances....

The good thing about this run is that there are plenty of beaches with civilization to pull into, if u think u can't make the distance....just jump on a bus, taxi or uber back to the start point, obviously let the organisers know if u do this....

They won't go if conditions aren't right....I'm half keen so I may see you there!!

Cheers and hopefully Good Winds!

Hi guys
im going to be in Coolangatta from Friday the 25th until the 29th.
Forecast not looking great and being from WA biggest kite is only an 8m, (strapless sb) but was wondering if in your experience the models tend to underestimate, or if there are better parts of the Gold Coast or north nsw with this forecast if I can rustle up a car?

will probably lug the gear anyways, but any advice on if say Kingscliff v tugun is the go, would be much appreciated

cheers

The wind meter for Coolangatta is at the airport so the beach will actually be a couple of knts better....

Currumbin or Kirra will be better for you in the noreaster....

There is a no go zone at Tugun due to the proximity of the airport so best to avoid

Cheers and fingers crossed for wind....

Strapless surfboard over 88kms would be epicly hard on your knees.

Comfy Footstraps, Boots or Foils recommended.

I did a downwinder of about 30kms with my surfboard recently and my knees felt every single bump from about the 10km mark onwards

Hey mate
agree, done 20-30km+ a few times (eg lanno to wedge in WA) and knackered by end. So 88km is off my radar haha I get sore feet funnily enough also...
Anyhow, Don't really have time for a long DW even with these bus stop drop outs, but sounds like Kirra best option for me.

Cheers for heads up though!

How did u go ??

It was a pretty awesome sight seeing 20-30 kiters coming down from Cook Island....

looked like a pretty well organised event....

Spoke to one poor guy whose bladder exploded a fair way out to sea....said he didn't have to wait long for help to arrive in the form of Slingshots jet ski back up team....Well done team Slingshot!!!

I caught sight of the flotilla while I was having a pre-kite dip at snapper.
Pretty cool seeing them smash down from Burleigh.

Would not have really been my cuppa doing a straight line offshore along the coast - but enjoyed the qld wind and some little waves at Kirra in the arvo.
Cool spot, must be amazing with swell and NEers

Yeah great. It was EPIC! I had a big and painful stack in the shallows 3k from the end which left me limping, but that was just being a silly bugger trying to showboat with in the shallows for the crowd. Other than that not really that beat up.

Took me 4 hours but had a couple of stops (keeping an eye on a tangle at the start, recovered a board, was sticking with a mate and see below). Big kudos to Slingshot and the crew for their organising. Definitely no complaints there.

Was the guy whose bladder blew just south of Fingal head? I was behind him and saw his kite jellyfishing. When it finally went down it was quite sobering how quickly he disappeared. Not sure if I would have seen him if I didn't catch the kite actually go down! (But that's what the orange flare is for I guess). I hung around with him for about 10-15 minutes to flag the jetskis and make sure they saw him. Interestingly I thought he was 1k out to sea, but from the looks for GPS it was only 500-600 metres. BIG looking ocean out there!

I was out in Fingal Rovers SLS IRB at the time. I didn't see him either. Glad he got in safe. Cook island is 500m off the causeway for reference.
3klm from finish would be about

Tyagarah ya? Lol. Few cute backpackers baking in the nude?
