Hey guys, another great session today at Carlton, but one thing to remember is not to kite through the yellow and red flagged areas, only pass through outside the surf break and 50 m either side of flagged area.

We don't want to be banned from kiting at this beach and same goes for Clifton or any other beach under SLSC duty,

Cheers, and happy kiting

Steven, Please retract your statement, some new kiter might not get your humour and could write off OUR beach for kiting thinking hes being hilarious grinding the flag poles.

Which it wouldn't be.

I look forward to your retraction...

Forget grinding the flags dude.....go for the over sized goat boats, or better still, the rubber duckie.....it's just like grinding a little red jumping castle, or better still, smack it hard and fast for that 'lil extra boost you've been searching for, or better still, excellent time to hone your slalom skills when the nippers have their swimming training.

Understand the concern, how much of a reality is there of possible bans in Tassie? How many kiters are even in tassie?? West oz will be the litmus paper, they are on borrowed time. Anyway Carlton was a great spot - had a blast (ozone rider). Looking forward to more kiting with the tassie crew.

More than you'd think. Only a fraction of us are on the forum.

The last thing we want is a kitemare involving non kiters, especially locals just enjoying their beach the same way they have for the last upteenth years, and someone getting hurt or worse. A little bit of healthy respect and common sense goes a long way! We have looked into it, and we are on a bit of shaky ground with the airport exclusion zone affecting a big whack of our everyday kite spots. New kiters and deviants please don't get the banhammer bought down on us. Come to a Ducks Nuts weekend to get loooooooooooooooooooooose with it!!!

15 years ago most of mount wellington was placed off limits to MTB as a result of
handful of complaints. There has been one kitesurfing death in tasmania already.WA, Vic NSW already have bans in place.
There have been incidents at cremorne beach every summer for the last 4 years, many of the locals are "anti" kite already. As has been pointed out we are a very small lobby group, the surf lifesavers who preform a public service with very little funding have a much bigger voice. The likelihood of bans in tassie? If people insist of behaving like F%$^wits I'd say quite high.

Red thumbs eh?? Interesting, considering i asked for a little bit of clarification on something.

Thanks for the friendly reminder for the world to see on the net

Maybe a simple word to the person in question could have been adequate.

not a very well written piece of journalism either. Highlights the point though. Wonder if it was a learner kiter or a land boarder? They do sell safetys with all new gear with instructions right? (and everyone is making sure that whoever you sell your old gear to has a safety that works?). Lots of new kiters out there, keep an eye out for them doing weird stuff!!

for those that haven't been following the altona dog beach forum- the council have started enforcing a existing law which has effectively closed the beach to kiters, the parallels for southern tasmania are a little worrying with several of the southern beaches(cremorne, carlton, clifton) technically in the airport exclusion zone.Apparently comments made on sea breeze forums in jest were used against kiters in discussions with the council involved.

i'd like to hear more details about that ruling, since when i sat down and looked at some airport legislation vs. kiting, there was only mention of kites flying more than 200 feet high... also some conflict between the height, but both heights were in the 100's of feet range...

you'll i find a map in this thread, www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Kitesurfing/Tasmania/How-Near-to-the-Hobart-Airport-can-we-Kite/
My understanding is that the exclusion zone extends at 45 degrees fro the end of the runway for 20nm and forbids anything above dune height. Kiters have been asked to leave parts of 7 mile in the past.

Having personally spoken to federal police at seven mile beach and local pilots and airport staff, the airport exclusion zone at seven mile beach exists and is a jurisdiction hotspot for local authorities. Just stay clear of it and no problemo - plenty of beach either side to kite on. There's a map of it on the link cram provided.
