G'day all,

I'll be coming to Launceston next year, and would like to kick into kiting,
I have had lessons but have held off on getting my gear as of yet.
I am 6ft and 88kg, and was wondering what size kite it is you would recommend for myself in tas.
Have been looking at Best Kahoona ( as its what i learnt on) and Naish Park.

And other than a decent wettie anything else i should be looking at for the tassie conditions?

Cheers and hope to see you out there.

i just started this season and i bought a 10m Griffin Argo as it was meant to be a good beginner kite (plus very useful once you know what you're doing). maybe look into it.

im not from tassie (am here on holiday atm tho) so i'm not sure what size kite you would want for the wind ranges down here.

i just went out today with my 10m at bakers beach and it was pretty awesome (approx. 20-25kts W/SW)

Hi Pirate-dude

Welcome - a very friendly kiting crew around Tassie.

Don't know the Best Kahoona or Naish Park. As long as they have decent depower (all modern kites do), you can't go too far wrong. Our winter squalls can be a bit frightening. I remember some of my early sessions on first coming to Tassie with my 2004 C-kites. Scariest sessions I've ever had!

I do most of my kiting on a 12m rebel (but love being over powered), or with a 9m eclipse kima (a dedicated wave kite) with a surfboard. The 6m gets a gurnsey occasionally.

You might find yourself kiting alone here a bit, so a kite that self launches well is pretty important.

If you are after a serious wettie, I have the perfect thing. Bought it without trying it on, and it's too big. Still got the store labels on it, never even been on the beach. Ion 5/4 dedicated kiting wettie medium tall, velcro seals, padded in all the important bits (like over your shins). Seriously warm. Bought wholesale for $550. Sell it for $300. I'm 6 foot, 75kg, and it was too big around the shoulders for me, so should suit you. 0407 253 362

Thanks mate, i might hit you up on the wettie, ill be down end of jan,

Around the 10m mark was what i was told would be fine for my size, but wasnt sure about what the conditions in tas are like :)

Looking forward to getting into it down there, and waveriding looks like a blast, so might have to look into giving it a burl to once im confident enough.

How do you find the rally? My boss raves bout em, but havent tried one myself

Hey Pirate

I have a 10m 2011 Rally. Nice kite. However, on extended adventures on the water, 2 hrs+, the bar pressure can get a bit much. I am only 70kg " on a good day " so it could just be I am a weak little girl. And depending on who you talk to, I really am a man

I recently bought a second hand, still minty, 2011 Ozone Catalyst 8m. In my opinion, it is a much better kite. Great in the waves, awsome boost, handles our wicked winter gusty conditions and the bar pressure is considerably easier on my boney little arms.

Just my 3 cents worth.

Hi again.

Well I'm on my way down. And have managed to put a kit together
Been nearly 8 weeks since my lessons and I'm going to chase up some refreshers. And pointers on setting up a fifth line. Seeing as I learnt on a four.
Is there and instructor in the north? I'll be based at Launy and not afraid to drive on weekends.
Managed to get a 2010 2nd hand 10m Naish park, got myself a mystic shadow and a 140x38 slingshot misfit. See you out there

Hey Sam and friends,

Read the post with interest as I've also just moved to launceston. Seems like the kiting community here is larger than I expected, which is fantastic news!

So ive got a week until college starts and am trying to work out where to go for a kite this time of year? I've got beginner status, so a nice 20kts over glassy waters sounds good, but whatever.

Allright sam and friends, Feel free to give me a buzz if anyone is looking for a kite now, tomorrow, this week/month/whenever. Otherwise, shall hopefully bump into you soon.

Heya been upta greens a few times, was pretty good if the bruises are anything to judge by, on the other hand i seem to be progressing, which is a bonus for me.
If anyones seen me up there, i have been on the red and white park.

Jim, you on campus? I am for the mo, which blows but ah well. Have found a few others in the course who are kiters as well and seem to be learning them selves and giving pointers.

Feel free to shoot us a line, if you want to go up, or have found somewhere better for the weekend :D

Hi All!

I just got to Launceston and I'm super keen to kite!

Where are the closest local kite spots??

FYI, I recently just got certified as an IKO Lev.1 Instructor and I have my own gear so anyone who wants lessons can give me a call!
