Gday,
Just learning to kite, would love some local input on safe places to learn where I will not annoy anyone, including the correct wind directions etc. I am slowly exploring the place but would love to have a little guidance. Also if there is anyone else out there learning and would like to partner up some day then feel free to message me.
Cheers Jono

The two best spots to learn where it's shallow flat water and no one to hurt but yourself would be schoolies (the bay down the bottom of south arm) which is ok for westerlies and probably south Easters though they would be offshore. The other spot is the lagoon side of Marion bay in north easterly winds.
Seven mile beach at low tide is ok in anything from southwest to south east winds but it gets choppy and most workable winds there are onshore so not so safe.
Cremorne would be an obvious choice but best avoid it as the prevailing north easterly wind is onshore and there are plenty of people using the beach.
In general, try to find a spot where the wind is not blowing directly onshore, away from trees, cars, people, power lines...

Mortimers bay is good is a SW, you don't have powerlines there which is a bonus and it is shallow, not many beach goers there which is good for learning. Good to have someone to help with the launch though, and then to walk out in the bay so you are clear of the trees. heaps of rocks and sharp stuff so booties are a must.

Stay well away from those red & yellow flags....and the over sized goat boats......and the rubber duckies......and ALL swimmers!!!!
Just think about what you are doing, what 'could' happen if all goes pear shaped, and don't piss people off.

Just to clarify, the front beach at cremorne is NOT at all user friendly, It is usually
straight onshore, and gets deepish quite close to shore. The only shallow area(south) is in the lee of the headland and quite fluky, and close to the boating channel. Any of the directions that are cross shore (north or south) are very gusty due to headlands at either end of the beach and during an outgoing tide the drain from the lagoon can take a board upwind faster than most can body drag. Do not come to cremorne unless you are confident sailing upwind, body dragging and deep water starting. Please do NOT sail up and down 10 metres off the beach with your kite over the heads of the people on the beach. Cremorne is a very small community- every time a kiter behaves like an ass on the beach, one of the resident kiters cops flack for it. The lagoon is quite user friendly in a sea breeze- just bring your booties:)

Jono,
Yep I live at Cremorne and have copped a bit of flack about about learners and others down here, I agree with 'cramhobart' kiting is being banned all over australia [just check out the forum] and we need to keep it in places that are not populated and / or respect other beach and water users. Do the maths, 40 kiters statewide, a banning in certain areas will effect stuff all people. I am sure you could get a least 40 people that have been pissed of by some kiters [and poleys] at some stage !!!

PS: ERK73 aka 'Steven' can try all he like about rubbing people up the wrong way, banning it up the north wont effect us down here ....much !!!
