same old visitor questions!

I've just arrived on a 6 week holiday to Hobart / Tasmania for some unimportant weddings etc blah blah. More importantly I brought my kite gear and was hoping to hit a few of the spots around Hobart as well as doing some road trips to places like Marion Bay, Cloudy Bay and Marrawah, the East Coast etc - anywhere there is wind.

I know Tasmania pretty well (grew up here) but not in a kiting sense so was hoping for some advice on what to do / see / look out for? Have been looking at this site (www.bom.gov.au/tas/observations/coastal.shtml) but any other local knowledge like what spots work in what directions, what spots are to be avoided etc would be much appreciated. Are the sea breezes reliable?

It would be great to meet a few locals as well since think I'm relocating here a bit later this year.

cheers!

Hi mate,
There are some great spots to kite around Hobart in most wind directions. The wind is a bit all over the place with lots of localised wind effects due to the mountains. I've been here a year now.
Some spots are as follows...

NE winds, Marion bay, Cremorne, Clifton beach, goats.
SE, Carlton, Clifton, seven mile, sandy bay
SW, south arm, mortimers bay, seven mile, Carlton.
NW, is typically gusty but south arm, lauderdale, Carlton if it has some west in it.

Carlton beach, Clifton, goats and Marion are the surf spots. My favourites.

I've probably missed a few and other will correct me but that's a start.

Having moved from Queensland, the wind down here feels a lot stronger than it looks and I've had to buy smaller kites... I hardly ever use my 11m anymore.

Although my colleagues will laugh, kiting in Tassie is a lot scarier than kiting the mainland!
