Hi Tommo78
I'm a newbie too, live on Launny......
I usually go to Greens Beach, East Beach at Low Head, or Badgers Head...
Greens is good in NE winds. Westerlies tend to be a bit gusty.
St Helen's has some good spots too, good camping as well

Head to Freers Beach, Port Sorrell in a 20 knot + NE wind. low to mid tide only if you are a beginner though. Very little beach on high tide and there are lots of sharp houses and cars close by. :)
WNW-NW Moorlands Beach works well. Turn off on the dirt track in front of the old Wesley Vale Pulp Mill. Again low to mid tide only. And don't stray to far West or you'll end up under the Devonport Airport flight path.
Most importantly though, be visual of others. Very few bystanders will understand the dangers involved with our sport. Also grab some lessons ASAP if you havn't already.
Play safe.
