Im keen, just might need a few months. I just want to eventually kite in the surf. Early days for me just kiting in weyba but up and riding both ways and even pulling off the odd slidding turn.

At the moment the wind is very light. I'm playing with the idea to go to Rainbow beach or Double Island Point for a day of kiting. I think it would be nice to kite down Rainbow.

How about next weekend? Wind permitting. Which day would be better?

What vehicle did you get? I've got a hilux dual cab so I'm good to take four passengers.

I suggest we go with one vehicle unless we can get a few takers.

Any takers? We'll go round the point inside the hook should be good.

Hey guys

I went up to Di for a kite last weekend as the graph was showing 17+ knots ESE so i stayed on the noosa side but fair close to the light house but it was really hard to get going alot of the time... Weather the graph is higher because the reading is taken from a higher location??

Also ive been going to Di for years but i havent been kiting for all that long but i thought Di lagoon only worked in a northerly?

cheers

Stu Flys - what was the beach run like from 3rd cutting past Teewah (coffee rock)?? Am interested in a DWinder -

After seeing a number of trapped by the tide wrecks on the Rainbow end (face book piks) not game to go that way till the sand has built up alot - it was low tide dash when I last went that way Nov'ish last year... would use the freshwater track before risking that run.

The wind reading is from the lighthouse on the top of DI so it is always stronger except in a NWN when there seems to be a rotor or shear - as have kited the lagoon in 15-20knts and the readings have been a lot lower.

Bertus et al..
My bias is to go on the falling tide leave a car at start and one at end and go for it. Regardless will stay in touch on this one and fingers x-ed doing a wind dance already. Trial run for the Cooloolah enduro.

Cheers

I went up smack on high tide, it was alittle bit hairy but it was fine, just take your time and go where everyone else was. And i thought the reading was taken from the light house.

Ive always gone up to DI but never kited the lagoon and it looks amazing so really want to do it.

Stuflys, when you are saying "lagoon" you mean the area to the west of the DI point?

So high tide at Noosa is going to be 8:35am and again at 9pm, that should give us a fair bit of time to kite. I don't like to be on the beach 2 hours either side of high tide.

It make sense that the wind is measured at the light house. Ok that could mean that we may struggle. But there's only one way to find out.

We could go for a downwinder if the wind direction is good.

Thanks 4 that Stuflys - I hate the hi tide soft sand run it is hard yards.

Bertus
at the top of the QLD forum there is a Where to kite guide for the SE.
There are pins for sites(/no go areas & shops), there are directional arrows for the downwinder sections. Each has their own description in the left margin.

If u scroll down the description till you get to the DI Lagoon one & double click to open - change to satellite view and zoom in - all is revealed.

The down winder details are also there - DI to Teewah or Teewah to DI -

If all comes together at a max I would go 20 kms with a pit stop 1/2 way.

The last good down winder I did was 5 - 6 kms as the crow flies but by the time you go in and out (I often cruise past the shark nets) & we checked out old women Island we covered closer to double the distance - great fun but was happy to park and stretch/scratch after that.

Pre xmas, the DI lagoon was 1/2 size of previous year when I last saw it but probably our best spot along the sunny coast. It is normally used in late winter & spring when you get the consistent NW's required - but anytime wind is in is a good time. The tide is king however - if you get that sequence it makes for a magic day - the kiteable area in the lagoon can be very tide dependent. My knowledge is 6 months old on that.
When it is on & the W/E 40 4WDS can turn up.

Cheers

I might be interested in a DI kite trip.

On another note, anyone interested in a downwinder one day this week on the Sunnie Coast? I was out today and the wind was good for my 11.5 kite. I was getting annoyed trying to stay upwind in the surf. I kept either having to tack way out or walk up the beach. Both were annoying. Ideally I'd like to go out tomorrow, Tuesday. Any takers?

I'd be up for a day trip, but I'd like to be back in the evening, if that's possible. What time are you guys thinking about leaving?

Ok guys hands up, who's in? It looks like it's going to be windy.

I suggest we meet someware close to the barge at around 10am. It would be good if we can have two vehicles for a good down winder. Otherwise we will make a plan.

I think we should be back in Noosa by 5:30 - 6:00 it's dark then anyway.

Sorry Bertus, can't do more than a couple hours.
I will have to be content with Golden Beach or Cotton Tree. Morning or Arvo will depend on tide and weather radar at time, will go if there are not too many squals coming through. Anyone else can PM me if they want a buddy in either of those 2 locations.
After about 4pm Friday is also a possibility at GB, will be Incomming tide on a SE if forecast holds.

Bertus - ch16 ahhh.... have not used my UHF CB's for 15+ years - car one probably still works but would need serious digging out and fixing in to current car - aerial probably rooted. As for handsets - naaah use mobile --- reception (Telstra) ok till 25 + kms up the beach (from memory).
Cheers

Thanks to everyone who joined today. It was a bit choppy and I spent a bit of time in the water but it was an experience. We should go and to it again.

Brett, you left your pump in my car. Contact me so I can get it back to you.

OK guys, bring on the photos to make me jealous.
I had a less than average session at lake Weyba (1st time there) but would still like to see some pics of your trip. Was thinking of you guys and hoping you had better wind than us: 15-18 for a while then under 10 for a while then back up and so on and so on.
Great spot though, will be back to join the very friendly crowd again, thanks guys!
