Hi

Thinking about around the first week that things go to shoulder at Thredbo from the 6th Sept. www.thredbo.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/passes.svg
Have done this a few times before and has always been a hoot . What I suggest is a ticket that covers the number of days that you are there ,turn up for 2 days ,5 days whatever . The wind does not always co operate and what we have done in the past is take advantage of lower priced tickets around $70 per day . Lower priced accom (from $50 per day yha dorm to $135 twin share inc breaky and dinner in a lodge ) When the wind is on go kiting .You will be knackered after 3 hrs .I have been going there snowkiting since 98 and know where to go where it is good and what to avoid .

so for those that can get a few days off come earlier in the week or if you can only come for a couple or few days come later .the good thing about this is that there is generally plenty of accom available and you can watch and see what the snow and weather is doing and make the call .this week is usually the peak snow depth week of the season and the weather can be very good .Cauliflower ice (kite and line eating)in the back country is generally history.
This is an excellent spot 20 mins from Thredbo .very good value and includes meals http://ski.com.au/accommodation/thredbo/ultimolodge/rates.html

If you mean the resort no .not allowed but just above the resort it is excellent .ramshead range just above the top of Karels T Bar Its all above 2000 m so there is extra cover there. It is actually a bowl just behind the ramshead range and the wind is quite smooth .If there is a fair bit of snow you can get some nice runs on the western side of the ridge that heads to kosi dropping down into the valley where cootapatamba hut is (Beware tho one of the guys a couple of years ago dropped in there right behind the lee of the Kosi ridge and there was no wind and he had to walk out .We were kiting there after a 20 cm fall in sept 2006 no worries. The resort was shot dirt everywhere .You can also start out near the bridge that crosses the creek on the track up to Kosi but it tends to be gusty and the wind carves some pretty nasty stuff in there .

Anyone else from newy going? (who knows ?Ive never really worried about that and enjoy meeting new and old friends from all over the place)
Is ur family going lach or only kiters? (My girls would love to come but have had too much time off school already and I have to be back for work Sun evening so they would only have a day ,they have all had their trips to the snow this year and are happy ,Amanda isn't really into the snow or snowkiting but does want to walk out to Kosci so she might come .If you mean my Mum and Malcs I think thay plan to cool their heels and recover after the last adventure .BTW thanks again to all for helping with the medivac and care of my mum and the notification to me after she fell off the horse .She felt like a real dill and is recovering well .Also when she decided to come on the trip I gave her express orders to behave .I checked in with everyone on the trip regularly and the replies were that she was a good old bird and good value (and told me to stop stressing about it)and if anyone was offended by her and Malcs decision to be there when we were ,,,well I spose tough, it was their decision and I have no control over who comes along to these public hookups be they kiters or non kiters ,sprogs or ancient relatives . My family has come along to many of the hookups I have run over the years going right back to the love in kitesurf event way back in 2000 and have helped out with setup packup retrieval of kiters etc and I don't intend to ban them.BTW anyone else's family members and friends be they kiter or non kiter are welcome on the hookups that I facilitate and I encourage them to get involved and I look forward to Col and his family in particular joining us next year in FIJI .This is also in the spirit of other events that I have not personally organised but have enjoyed over the years where all are welcome and encouraged to get involved irrespective of their background age ,sex etc such as Mambo ,Bob Dawson's kiters picnic ,Adelaide kite festival and many more )

Also I am a member of a lodge in thredbo that we used as a hookup 2 years ago that everyone enjoyed $130 per person per night inc breaky and dinner , if anyone would like to stay there please send me your details

Long range weather forcast is a bit all over the shop at this stage it looks like pineapples next weekend (that is snow forum speak for warm influx of warm moist tropical air and possible r**n and elephant snot snow) with a bit of snow in behind it to freshen things up but then a return to pineapples later in the week .there has been no consistency in the models tho in the last few days for this period and anything could happen if it looks like pineapples a few days out we might move it to the following week)

what size kite recommended only my small 9m ? (it will depend on the wind )

OK so we take all kites.

So I better not get to serious about booking time off or accomodation well
At this stage I am 99% going, If you changing dates keep us posted when the dates firm up.

So you will be staying at your lodge I assume?
I guess that is also dorm style?
Do u need a park pass for threadbo?
I only ever been to perisher

I emailed ultimo this morning, but no response yet.

late next week is a fair way off but the 3 different models have fallen into line with warm northerly winds and rain for this period . I am not really into driving 9 hrs and spending lots of money for pineapples (especially when it looks like there will be good NE winds here )

The models for the following week are starting to emerge and they are looking quite good .Drier and cooler with moderate southerly winds .Next week still looks like rain for thurs and fri so i think we'll call next week off and postpone and hopefully the next weekend will be good

yes that is right you do .it is $35 now and thanks to some people a couple of years ago leaving their kites with the liftie at Karels (duh) and skiing karels and the basin for hours when the wind was crap on a crackenback only chair ride and talking to everyone about it, if you roll up with your kite saying that you are going backcountry they might not load you on .(Hopefully things have blown over after a couple of years and they will load kiters like every other backcountry skier/boarder )
I plan to but a 2 or 3 day pass where it works out at $70 per day where I can kite and ride lifts if the wind is poor at the top .

They weren't really sure but sounded like lifts etc

Can't imagine that happening

yep perisher resort closes guthega and smiggins earlier than the rest of the resort as a cost saving measure (due to lack of patrons ) too bad for the members of lodges at guthega in particular with a long drive around to Perisher front valley.
Don't worry ther eis plenty of snow where we are going
