I used to live down in Mt Eliza but never really found there was much of a crew at any of the beaches down that way... mainly because there aren't any good beaches for kiting in the immediate vacinity.

You'll find there's a few locals on the beaches north from Frankston (Chelsea, Bonbeach, etc) when the southerly seabreezes are on, and some awesome spots down around and at Rye when the northerlies are blowing.

If your after a nice friendly bunch you can jump on Facebook and sign up with the MAKO (Melbourne Average Kiters Organisation) crew who also have a email list for organising events. Most of them are based around Mentone through to Port Melbourne but the group is growing quite rapidly these days.

Weclome to the beaches! I bet your looking forward to summer as much as the rest of us Melbournites now.

Thanks for that Koma,
I was thinking about Rye and maybe down around Flinders/Shoreham/Westernport bay. I'll do the facebook thing too.

Cheers.

Jim,

If you are still a begginer i would suggest RYE front beach/ Rosebud as it is pretty shallow and you can stand for about 200m out, lots of flat water.

Westernport ( peninsula side ) is pretty good in most Easterly directions but not really suitable for beginners as :
1) there is rarely anyone else there
2) not shallow and therefore deep water relaunches are required.
3) its pretty rocky in places.

Once you are confident it is an awesome spot to kite as well as Flinders backbeach and a great break from the crowd.
Just dont tell everyone !

I looked for this group on facebook. No luck. Do they still exist?

I saw a whole bunch of kiters out St Kilda yesterday. Summer will be Gold!
