Guys

I am a bit worried, possibly you can help? Usually I grow some stones this time of year, put on some booties, gloves and condomesque neoprene hood, flick the bird to all the show pony summer kite surfers and head out into the raging frontal systems for some brutal fun.

On Saturday however I turned into a pussy

I was at Point Henry looking for the first decent bit of wind in over a month kite pumped, cranial condom donned and out I went to do battle with the elements. Sure it was cold but hey I am a MAN I can handle it, right? Well er........no.

The first spray of water up the old wetsuit legs felt like a white walker had got hold of the old chap! Next a crashed front roll was like falling into a bag of knives, talk about instant headache. After 20 minutes I was looking at my watch and was wondering what was a legitimate amount of time to be out and after 40 I was back on the shore. After I had retrieved my testicles from under my rib cage I had to stop and consider if I have become a soft as $hite.

So can someone put me out of my misery and confirm to me that it really was THAT cold on Saturday and that my lamentably short session was justified or do I just need to bugger off to Fiji for a few weeks and drink a serious cup of concrete?

Yes, harden up. I'm broken at the moment so have a legitimate excuse, you however do not. I dream of having a bag of knife induced headache. Maybe you should do both, Fiji and harden up. Get out there.

It is ****** cold. I was out for 1.5hrs in pouring rain at St. Kilda Sunday morning and looked like the Michelin man.
Fleece shirt, 4/3, impact vest, neo hood, helmet, boots and gloves. Not ideal but I was very, very keen to get out after 2 months.

Step 1. Tuck the legs of your wettie into the tops of your booties. No more water up the leg. No more cold nads.

Ste 2. Get better at riding. Aim for style over dick tricks. Try a directional and go for the perfect carve gybe with foot switch. You get less spray off a directional, you get less full body dunkings when you fall, you learn a new skill that is useful.

Other stuff. Polypropylene thermals under the wettie greatly increase your warmth.

And no, it wasn't particularly cold on Saturday. Wait until August.

As Billy Connolly always says: "There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing."

You've got to weigh up the cost of a good quality dry suit vs. flying somewhere up north when there is a good wind prediction.

the problem with winter in Vic the conditions are so unreliable... and if you have to make a big trip to the other side of town hoping to catch some decent wind, it takes a lot of comittment because by the time you get there, the wind could turn out cr@p... (and it usually is cr@p most of the time during winter if you are after clean wind). Combine that with freezing cold and one just starts reverting to CBB attitude. But then you get depressed because of lack of kiting during the winter... catch 22.

If only there was something reliable you could do irrespective of weather, wind conditions and forecast. Something where you wouldn't have to re-arrange your whole schedule just because there might be half hour of some reliable wind... Something that won't cost a small fortune like some far tropical island holiday trips...

And this is where i discovered the love of cable park riding in the nearby Sydney. You can snatch airfares to Sydney for around $100 bucks (as i did few weeks ago). Take couple of days off, or go on a weekend and you are set. You will get massive kick out of it... you can do it irrespective of the weather conditions (excluding cyclones or similar)... Sydney is fairly warmer than Melb by default... and so forth...

The place is open all year round (thursday - sunday during winter). Accomodation available at/near the park if you don't have friends/family to stay with.

www.cableswakepark.com.au

so i'd say you don't need to HTFU. Just STFU (smarten the fk up). And do something where you are guaranteed to have fun.

If you require better and more reliable forecast go to Met Eye. My last four kites in waves have been great and each time the wind has been stronger than forecast ,wind has come in time aprox to forecast

Water temp has dropped a few degrees over the last couple of weeks.
Time to rubber right up.

Wondering if anyone has tried land boarding, as a warmer option in winter?

Interested to hear if people use the same kite? and where?
