All those beaches are pretty good.......although you have to be lucky with the banks anything over 8ft + and it can be hard to find a clean break that is not closing out. When it is this size and bigger the reefs at Flinders are your best bet.

There are a few reef options at the portsea end but they do require a walk or a kite down the beach,
you will also find a few reef spots at Rye, ST Andrews and Gunna for smaller surf but they will only hold up to 6- 8ft after that they close out on the outer bank before the reef.

Yeah it's a good spot to surf and away from the crowd (Franklin Rd)

Just watch the walk in and out on warm days.. A mate an I went for a surf on a 34 degree day...about 11am got out about 1:30 - 2pm the walk back took almost an hour ! the soft sand in the dunes was soooo hot with no shade on offer we had to use the one rashie between us as a "safe island" by running about 5 steps then throwing it down. But still burnt our feet.

Damn thats nasty.
Shes a fair old hike.
Took the kite there once for a muck around two boards and gear
Sucked walking back lol
not as bad as your mission back though.
How did you start in the beginng out in the surf?
Having on shore wind just start along he edge in small swell amd work up?
Im real keen to give it a proper crack once i get anpther kite for lighter wind.
Should get more oportunities to get out without driving miles.
And dvds you could recomend?
Cheers cam

Might be better to try at a spot like Torquay (Point Danger) where the waves are a little milder if you're not experienced. Gunnamatta has quite a hard break if you're a beginner.

righty'o
I wouldnt be going out untill i got the other kite and know how she handles
and im back up to speed.
And go out in some nice conditions.
I think id try to keep to the smaller swell if possible.
Not to stressed about the waves done a lot of water sking and wakeboarding etc in crap conditions haha makes a stronger skiing is my theory lol

all info taken on board dont want to bite off more than i can chew.
thanks for the info
cheers cam

For newbies to the surf, a flat, tidal beach is good. You get some nice shallows to stand in to launch and turn on the inside. If it gets screwed up you and your gear just get washed into the shallows.

Places like Sandy Pt in the east or Fairhaven to the west are good.

You can learn a heap on the bay in strong winds. Learning to punch out through onshore slop and carving turns in a limited space is great training.

ok sounds like good advice.
The beach i had a muck around with is pretty much like how you explained.
its shallow allong the beach from left to right with a small gutter almost on the beach. its pretty much one big sand bar that goes out about 50 meters but from left to right for a couple of hundred meters.
and then out further it gets deeper where the waves are bigger and break.
so for the stuff in closer its just small fluffy waves which are fairly easy to negotiate.
so i could practice in close and as experience comes i could go out further where the waves are bigger.
only going to do it with a southerly as its straight on shore and if it turns to crap i'll blow back to the beach.

the carve turns are pretty much all i do.
I guess its habit from skiing and wakeboarding.
i need to get them tighter though i think i used about 5 meters to turn in.
