Yes old kites have ****ty safety systems, but those systems are on the bar more so than on the kite itself. If the kite has a 5th line attachment point in the centre of the kite, then it's not too bad and safety is relevant to the equipment you have in your hands.
I've flown old (pre 2008) Cabs, North, Fluids and one RRD Hyper Type and they all have ****ty safety depower lines and bar systems, but change it over to a newer depower system, especially one with a 5th line and you're ok - relatively.
Horses for courses of course, but if you know what you're doing, I say go for it!
